Penn Camera's News & Notes
Salt Lake City

By Jeff Snyder

Olympic Fever sure catches you by surprise....

When I was in Salt Lake City this past week, I felt like one of the tourists, scrambling for one of the ROOTS Beret's (which I never did find) and pins galore (which I did gather quite the collection, and have some to trade?).

I was able to see so many of you in the Main Media center (MMC) that I speak to and correspond with via email, it was GREAT! The media center was hopping with excitement! Images, shot by the world's best sports photographers were plastered all over the walls from the Opening Ceremonies to every event that had taken place thus far, it was like walking through an art gallery of sports photos.

Both Nikon and Canon had very impressive facilities, with loaners, repairs and workstations to prepare, print and transmit your images on the spot.

Now it's back to normal ... whatever that is, and getting ready for the NEW product announcements being made this week at the PMA (Photo Marketing Association) Show in Orlando, FL.

As of today, we have heard about the following:
Nikon D100 Digital SLR (6.1 megapixel) based on the Nikon N80 camera, Nikon VR 70-200 f2.8G IF-ED, Nikon SB80DX Flash, Nikon AF-S 24-85 f3.5-4.5.

Canon's D60 Digital SLR, replacing the D30, a 6.29 million pixel camera ... plus more. By the time this issue is released we will have so much more information, prices and (hopefully) delivery dates...stay tuned.

We are now stocking the Digital Camera Battery (, and have been getting rave reviews from our customers. These batteries will power not only your strobes, but your digital cameras and laptop computers as well. I recently had some custom power cables made for IBM laptops and have been told by my customers that they are powering their laptops for at least 3 hours on the 30 watt battery, which is very impressive, especially if you are transmitting from the side of a mountain in the snow.

Nikon's $500 instant rebate continues through the month of March on both the D1H and D1X cameras. Take advantage of this price reduction while you can...Both are in stock for immediate delivery. The 300 f2.8 ED-AFS lens is a steal with a $400 rebate on it, as is the 80-200 f2.8 AFS with a $200 rebate ... many more rebates are in effect from Nikon though March.

Canon...Canon...Canon...WOW how patient most of you have been, waiting for your EOS1D cameras As you all know, the delivery to the dealers in the past 45 days or so, have been weak...But, there is light a the end of the tunnel, and after the Olympics, we hope to see an abundance of cameras arrive. Our fingers are crossed. Hang in there, and feel free to contact me anytime to check on your order, but I'm not promising any delivery dates at this time.

Lexar has a new firmware update for their 16X cards that are being used in the Canon EOS1-D cameras ... Contact Lexar directly at: All of Lexar's Cards are in stock from 64mb to the new 1GB card!

Microtech's 256mb High Speed Compact Flash remain very popular, and priced at $139.95 ... In stock for immediate delivery!

Lightware has a new line-up of rolling Cargo Cases on the way ... Look for new products from LowePro and Tenba as well...

More info on NEW gear to follow ... Feel free to contact me anytime with questions or orders.
