Times A Changin' in The Hall of Fame?
By Rich Pilling, Major League Baseball

Have you ever been to Cooperstown during the Baseball Hall of Fame Induction weekend? If you're a baseball fan and you've been there you know what a treat it is. However, did you notice that something was missing on Induction Day? Broadcasters as well as writers are honored along with the players. Photographers are not included in the ceremonies. To quote Bob Dylan, "The Times They are a Changin'".

Almost six years ago I began a letter writing campaign at the suggestion of Al Tielemans, to then Hall of Fame Director of Media Relations Bill Guilfoile to find out if the Hall of Fame was interested in creating an annual photographers award, similar to the awards given to writers and broadcasters. Guilfoile showed interest. He presented his case to "the powers that be" at the Hall of Fame. Unfortunately, at that time his request was denied.

Nearly every year since 1996 I have written letters and have communicated with Jeff Idelson, Hall of Fame Vice President of Communications and Education (Media Relations). Idelson expressed the same interest as Guilfoile. During the most recent World Series, I had the opportunity to sit and talk with Idelson along with Paul Cunningham from MLB Photos and photographers Brad Mangin and Ron Vesely. Idelson strongly believes that there should be an annual photographers award. In fact, he invited Paul and myself to Cooperstown to continue our dialog.

Paul and I recently returned from our trip to Baseball's Mecca. There we met with Idelson along with other representatives from the Hall of Fame. Jeff will present our case to the Chairman and President of the Hall of Fame once he has enough information.
What I am asking you to do, is to provide me with a list of photographers names', the era in which they worked as well as the organization whom they worked for who you feel would be qualified to receive this award. I suggested the initial award be presented to Charles Conlon. And that the award be named after him. Please take this seriously. No jokes, please. We have the opportunity to recognize the baseball photography greats and to show others how proud we are of our profession.
