Penn Camera's Fall News & Notes
By Jeff Snyder

I am just back in the office after a week of traveling the country with the NPPA's Flying Short Course, and it was terrific to meet so many of the Sports Shooter readers in my travels. One of the big reasons that we take part in national trade shows is to meet the people that we speak to every day, and again, thanks for your support!

Here are a few new and exciting items that are happening in the industry:

Canon -- Finally the D30's have started to arrive and orders are being fulfilled as soon as possible. If you have an order in with us, they are being shipped as soon as possible. Also the new 420EX Canon strobes started to arrive as well (it replaces the 380EX which has been discontinued). If you are looking for a gift for that someone "special" this holiday season, Canon's 15x45 IS Image Stabilized Binoculars are now $799.99, they list for $2300!!! The new G1 Digital cameras should be in stock at any moment...

Nikon -- D1's are available, as are SB28DX strobes.....Nikon's new 18-35 f3.5-4.5 D/AF is a great low price wide zoom, an excellent alternative to the 17-35 f2.8 SW, both are in stock. Also, the new 24-85 f2.8-4 D/AF lenses have started to trickle in, and speaking of NEW arrivals, the lens that many of you have been waiting for, the 80-400 VR (Vibration Reduction) lenses have started to arrive....slowly. We are proud to announce that Penn Camera is now a Nikon "Premier" Binocular dealer and now stock the entire Nikon Scope and Binocular line-up...The Coolpix 880, Coolpix 990, and Coolpix 950's are all in stock for immediate delivery.

Hoodman --The Hoodman clear caps for the D1 are in stock, and flying out the door...If you haven't seen the Hoodman Laptop Hood, you're missing out on a great new product. The Laptop Hood slides right over your screen for discreet viewing, so that your neighbor can't see which image you're about to transmit and if you're working outside in the daylight, you can see your screen!

Bronica -- Bronica has announced the RF645 range-finder medium format camera in Japan, which will be available in late November...The RF645 comes with 3 interchangeable lenses and a flash unit....More info to follow.

Olympus -- If you visited my display on the Flying Short Course, you had a chance to see the P400 dye-sublimation printer from Olympus. It's the lowest priced dye-sub printer on the market, prints directly from Smart Media or Type II memory cards, or plug it into your computer via USB or Parallel cables. With a print time of 90 seconds and a per print cost of under $2.00, this is an excellent choice for re-sale prints....Also take a look at the E10 4 megapixel camera, WOW! Olympus has a promo on its' 115 and 140 point and shoot film cameras, buy one and get a FREE companion airline ticket on one of 9 different airlines....Something to keep in mind for the Holidays!

IBM -- 170mb, 340mb and 1GB Microdrives are now in stock for immediate delivery.

LEXAR -- We have just received the new Lexar Firewire Card readers...that will read both Compact Flash I and II....

Lowepro-Lightware-Tenba -- we have the cases for all of your needs...A new product for us, is the Novoflex "MagicBall" Head in both the Mini and Standard sizes, it's a very quality ball head at a reasonable price....
