Sports Shooter News & Notes
By Robert Hanashiro

The Des Moines Register has a new director of photography, John Gapps III, formerly of the Associated Press.

* And speaking of the AP, Juanito Holandez recently joined the Los Angeles bureau as a picture editor. He formerly was a staff photographer at the Contra Costa Times.

* Larry Price has been hired at the Denver Post given the title Managing Editor/Photography. He assumed the helm this month and replaces former director of photography John Sunderland. Sunderlund has taken an assignment editor position on the city desk.

* Vincent Laforet has been hired as a staff photographer at the New York Times. Laforet, a winner in the 1999 Sports Shooter Contest, formerly
worked at Allsport, USA.

* There have been a lot of happenings in the newspaper business recently in California with the sale of the San Francisco Examiner to the Fang Family and Times Mirror (LA Times, Newsday, et al) merger with the Chicago Tribune Company. For a great site to read information about these two big transactions, go to NewGossip.com at: http://www.poynter.org/medianews/

* "The Million Dollar Moment" photo contest deadline is fast approaching. PhotoPoint.com is sponsoring a contest for all photographers with a $1,000,000 first prize. To check out details for entering the contest, check out http://www.photopoint.com/gomillion/pc_main.html.

* We have a correction for an item in last month's Sports Shooter. Terri Hayt has taken a position at the Arizona Daily Star, not the Tucson Citizen.
