Gear Corner
Penn Camera Updates

By Jeff Snyder, Penn Camera

Well here we are a few weeks after PMA sorting out all the news about upcoming products, so here's a few tidbits that will be of interest...

FUJI

New S1 Pro Digital SLR, this is a 6.1 megapixel SLR based on a Nikon N60 Body. Fuji is calling this a "Super CCD", due to the fact that it's larger than its competitors. It has an ISO range from 320 to 1600, and shutter speeds from 30 to 1/2000th of a second. It also has dual slots for memory cards accepting both Smart Media and Compact Flash Cards. This is a VERY exciting product! More information will follow, but in the meantime, you can look here http://fujifilm.com for all the specs. Look for pricing under $4000.

New Fuji FinePix 4700 Zoom Digital Camera, for under $1000...WOW! This has 4.3 million pixels, a 3X zoom, in a compact metal body that'll fit in a shirt pocket! Transfers images via USB and has an AVI Capture mode for recording both video and sound. This will be a very hot new digital camera.

NIKON

New AF VR Zoom-Nikkor 80-400 f4.5-5.6 ED ... VR is Nikon's new "Vibration Reduction" technology, available in the next few months. For more info http://www.nikonusa.com

The D1 continues to be the MOST popular camera I have ever seen in my 20+ years in this business. The demand is still high, and I'm happy to report that the supply is getting better. I'm now telling customers that they should be looking at about a 30 day or less wait once they've place a firm order with us. Contact me with any questions that you may have on D1's and it's related accessories.

IMPORTANT NOTE: NIKON has told us that there will be a price increase on April 1st, 2000 on selected items, including some lenses, and cameras including the D1.

QUANTUM

Turbo CKE Cables are now in stock for the SB28DX. We're still waiting for the JackRabbit Cables, but soon!

CANON

Their new flagship Pro Camera, Canon's EOS1-V was shown at PMA, and we expect delivery to begin sometime in the next few months. Priced at $1899. This is a FILM camera, we're all still waiting for Canon to introduce a NEW Pro Digital Camera ... stay tuned.

IMPORTANT NOTE: CANON has told us that there will be a price increase on April 1st, 2000 on selected items, including some lenses and bodies.

KODAK

NEW--SUPRA Films are replacing the current Ektapress PJ films, in 100, 400 and 800 ISO. All are fine grain, and designed for scanning. The 800 ISO can be pushed to 3200 ISO.

Also, there is a new PORTRA 800 film that is replacing the current PMZ 1000. This is great for low light location photography with smooth neutral flesh tones.

Kodak now has a new way to purchase the DCS520 and DCS620 cameras, it's what they are calling the "stripped down" versions. By removing the AC Adapter, Battery Charger, Printed Manual, and replacing the Anti-Aliasing filter with the IR block-only filter the price is drastically reduced. These are an excellent buy if you already have DCS cameras in your office. The US List for the DCS520 Stripped version is $7495, and the DCS620 stripped version is $7995. CALL ME FOR YOUR PRICING.

Kodak has also re-introduced the $500 rebate on DCS520/620 cameras. This is on the FULL version, and not the "stripped down" version that I mentioned above.

Also, a new NiMh battery for the DCS cameras will be available very soon, priced at $99 per battery, and a new firmware for direct transmission through a cell phone modem, directly out of the camera, no laptop needed!

EPSON

Exciting new 1440 DPI printers are on the way! They are the 870, 875DC and 1270 models. The 875DC has a PCMCIA Slot for direct printing of your digital files! They will all include an adapter to hold a new 4" roll paper that is micro perforated and will print 4x6's full bleed! Take a look here for more info http://www.epson.com

OLYMPUS has announced a new 64mb Smart Media Card.

SANDISK has a 192mb Compact Flash card coming soon, to add to their complete line of Compact Media....

LOWEPRO was showing a "Shoulder" STEALTH bag, designed for your laptop and Digital Camera, pricing and availability in the next few weeks. http://lowepro.com
