On The Sidelines

I got e-mail from AP's David Longstreath recently. A few years ago David transferred to Bangkok, Thailand. He says he's enjoying his life in the jungle. He doesn't cover much sports these days. It's mostly hard news there. He has spent a lot of time covering the fighting in Indonesia this year. The closest he's been to sports recently was as an editor at the Asian games last year. David said, "there were several sports I had never seen such as Kabuddy, something like tag from India and if course other Asian sports involving knives and clubs." David has been doing his share of dodging rocks and bullets. He says, " I just got back from four days up on the Thai-Burma border where I visited the Shan State rebels and one of their remote mountain top jungle outposts. We had to smuggle ourselves in and out and the images were very good." Unfortunately the images did not get much play since there's not much interest in the US.

Baby boom ... USAT's sports photo editor Steve Mawyer is now a father of a bouncy baby boy, Ben. T.C Baker of The Victoria Advocate in Victoria, TX recently found out his wife was expecting with their first child, due in May.

We are sad to report that Beth Dillon, wife of USA Today staff photographer Tim Dillon, passed away Friday November 26th at Johns Hopkins Hospital after a long battle with cancer. In lieu of flowers, donations for Beth Dillon can be sent to the Eastport Volunteer fire department: at 914 Bay Ridge Rd, Annapolis, MD 21403.

On the move...Photo editor Pancho Bernasconi of the Chicago Tribune has taken a job as sports photo editor for the New York Times. He will start there on January 24h. His wife, AP photographer Beth Keiser, has requested a transfer to AP's New York bureau. Jack Gruber formerly of the Detroit News has taken a job at the Memphis Commercial-Appeal.
