Faculty member Matt Brown assists students on a portrait session with athlete and comedian Travon Free during a Sports Shooter Academy workshop in 2008.
The Sports Shooter Academy Lighting Luau, to be held April 22 - 23, 2011 in Southern California, is now accepting applications.

A short promotional video, details on the workshop and a link to the on-line application form are at the workshop's website:

The Lighting Luau features two days of shooting in various portrait situations, educational classroom sessions and inspirational presentations by the faculty.

"What is the best way for photographers to differentiate themselves from the rest of pack?" said Sports Shooter founder Robert Hanashiro, "Show them the light! We've put together a program that will give workshop participants a chance to learn and work with various lighting tools --- from small speedlights to portable studio lighting systems --- in a wide range of real life situations under the guidance of a wonderful group of photographers we have on the faculty."

The workshop faculty includes: Matt Brown, Southern California freelance photographer and SSA co-founder; Hollywood-based photographer David Honl; editorial, commercial and advertising photographer Tim Mantoani; Robert Beck, Sports Illustrated; Michael Goulding, the Orange County Register; Myung J. Chun, the Los Angeles Times and Hanashiro, a staff photographer with USA TODAY.

Shooting sessions will be in small groups that will give participants a chance to learn, experiment and be creative while also working as a team, assisting one another, brainstorming ideas and like all in Academy programs, having some fun as well.

"Shooting a portrait involves so many things," Hanashiro added, "Lighting is important, it can take a blah scene and make it pop. But working with your subject is also part of that creative process and we will talk a lot about that in classroom sessions and out in the field."

The Sports Shooter Academy Lighting Luau is sponsored by Samy's Camera. If you cannot make it to the full two days of the Lighting Luau, Samy's is also sponsoring an evening session on the Friday of the workshop featuring presentations by Mantoani and Beck that will be open to the public. Details on this event will be announced in the coming weeks.

"If you can't make it for the entire workshop, Samy's Camera has come up with a wonderful way for everyone to to be a part of this educational event by sponsoring the Friday evening lectures," Hanashiro said.

Supporting the Lighting Luau with equipment is Nikon, USA. Participants will be able to check out loaner cameras, lenses, speedlights and other accessories from Nikon representatives on site.

Dynalight will also be providing equipment for participants to use during the Saturday location lighting sessions. Think Tank Photo and HonlPhoto are also generously supporting the Lighting Luau.

"The Sports Shooter Academy workshops have always had some portrait and lighting sessions which have always been very popular. We decided that maybe the time is right for us to put on an entire program on lighting and portraits, so that's how the Lighting Luau came about," Hanashiro said.
