April 22-23, 2011 will be the dates for the Sports Shooter Academy Lighting Luau in Southern California.

"Just like our Sports Shooter Academy, the Lighting Luau will have at its foundation a lot of hands-on experience and a good amount of shooting by the workshop participants," said Robert Hanashiro, Sports Shooter founder and a staff photographer with USA TODAY.

In addition to Hanashiro, the Lighting Luau faculty will include photographers Matt Brown and David Honl. Other workshop faculty will be announced in the coming weeks.

"Our goal for our workshops has always been learning by doing," Hanashiro said, "As usual we will have a great faculty and staff that will teach, inspire, guide and assist participants and then critique the photos that they produce during the two days.”

The workshop will feature instruction on location studio-type lighting gear plus a lot of work with speedlights. "There is a tremendous amount of interest in speedlights," Hanashiro said, "Every photographer has one, two or more of these small strobes in their bags. We will spend a lot of time showing participants how to get the most out of their speedlights to make some fabulous portraits."

It is no accident the Luau name has been resurrected to be included in the new workshop's title, Hanashiro said. "Like the original Workshop & Luau, this program will be educational AND FUN!"

Several new videos have been posted on the workshop's website, including one on a lighting session at SSA VII that will give those interested in the Lighting Luau a sneak peak at one session, the Two-Minute Drill: http://sportsshooteracademy.com/videos/

Samy's Camera and Nikon are supporting the Sports Shooter Academy Lighting Luau.
