Decade Collection: David Eulitt
By David Eulitt, Kansas City Star

David Eulitt in Athens.
This isn't my best photo of the decade, or even for that matter, a good one.

But this photo has enormous personal meaning to me as it represents a professional and personal dream realized. In 2004, I was amazingly fortunate to cover the Athens Olympic Games for Knight-Ridder Tribune, a collection of journalists pulled from Knight Ridder newspapers. Ever since I was a young boy, watching every moment of the 1972 Munich and 1976 Montreal Olympics on television, all the way through Sydney in 2000, I had dreamed of BEING at an Olympic Games in person. Photographing an Olympics was almost too much to imagine.

I made this photo after I set up a remote camera at the finish line in the Athens Olympic Stadium, my first time inside the venue. After walking through security, it really hit me that I was in the middle of my dream and I took a lot of time looking around and taking it all in. Of course, I acted like it was no big deal to my colleagues, most veterans of multiple international assignments. Thankfully, no one can see butterflies in your stomach.

Knight Ridder Tribune turned into McClatchy Tribune and I had another amazing experience four years later in Beijing, another whirlwind of memories and photography. This photo reminds me that the past decade has been truly unforgettable for me.
