Atlanta, Ga. - Super Bowl XXXIV, St. Louis Rams v. Tennessee Titans. Titan's Kevin Dyson tries to stretch across the goal line on the final play of the game. He is stopped by the Rams' Mike Jones.
Ten years is a long time. For a professional photographer, 10 years of work is a lot to consider.

Every year begins with hope and ends with anticipation of better things ahead. I have been lucky to have friends and family that have put up with my eccentricities over the years, the most time consuming of which has been putting out this newsletter every month.

As this decade ends, I wanted to commemorated its passing by collecting images from these special people that have helped me over the years. I asked them to select an image of theirs that is historic, unique, revealing or memorable.

Most of all, I wanted the image to be something personal … an image special to them.

After the usual coaxing and cajoling, the group of images and stories behind them is a microcosm of what I envisioned the Sports Shooter Newsletter to be: Educational, enlightening, entertaining and inspiring.

As I said when this newsletter started way back in the Summer of 1998, my mission is: Photographers telling their stories in their words.

For me, this decade began with a photograph that summed up why I love sports photography and what sports photojournalism is all about. As time was running out in Super Bowl XXIV, the Tennessee Titans were marching down the field, with the St. Louis Rams, clinging to a 23-16 lead. On the final play of the game, quarterback Steve McNair connected with receiver Kevin Dyson and as he stretched his body from the two to get the football over the goal line, Rams linebacker Mike Jones stops him as the clock runs out.

Up until that second, I probably had my crummiest game of the season. That play and that photograph set the tone for me for that year and for the rest of my career: Keep on grinding. Stay positive. Be prepared.

Thanks to: Robert Beck, Matt Brown, Dave Burnett, Darren Carroll, Bob Deutsch, Dave Honl, Chuck Liddy, Brad Mangin, Rod Mar, Matt Mendelsohn, Don Miralle, Peter Read Miller, Paul Morse, Trent Nelson, Anne Ryan, Robert Seale, Wally Skalij, Pete Souza, Jack Gruber and Vince Laforet for contributing to the Sports Shooter Newsletter’s Decade Collection and especially for their support of this newsletter and workshops … and most of all their friendship.
