Daryl Peveto is a Story Idea Producer for the VJ Multimedia Workshop.
Over the years, so many people in the visual journalism community have volunteered in support of the education of the next generation of visual journalists. We are pleased to announce a tuition-free multimedia workshop open to all university students and visual journalists who have been laid off in the past two years.

VJ Workshops has partnered with Brooks Institute’s Visual Journalism Program to document the community of Ventura, CA. This workshop includes a 24-hour shoot followed by two post-production workshop days in a team environment. In addition, there will be a variety of guest speakers. This multimedia project combines photography, video and audio storytelling steeped in the documentary tradition, using the latest technology in visual storytelling.

Some of the guest faculty and guest speakers for this event include Tom Kennedy of
http://www.kennedymedia.net; Scott Anger, Director of Video at the Los Angeles Times; Grover Sanschagrin of PhotoShelter ; Myung Chun, videographer at the Los Angeles Times; Pauline Lubens, Staff Photojournalist at the Mercury News; Dave LaBelle, photojournalist and author; and Jim Merithew, Wired.com Photo Editor.

Currently sponsors include PhotoShelter, Olympus and Brooks Institute.

My goal for this workshop is to create a space where we can share ideas, techniques and, most importantly, philosophies about visual journalism in a workshop environment. Rather than creating one portfolio quality multimedia piece, the aim is to nurture a philosophy of practice in the participants that will provide strategies for creating compelling multimedia stories on a daily basis as the industry continues to change.

This workshop is about understanding the traditions of our field and going forward with new techniques to add to the ongoing stories we tell about humanity. It is imperative that we do not let go of the traditions of visual storytelling that we have learned and shaped as we teach the next generations of storytellers.

Application is open to all college students and visual journalists who were laid off over the past two years. This is a tuition-free workshop.

Application Deadline – June 21, 2009

Information about the workshop and applying for the workshop is available at
http://www.vjworkshops.org.

We hope to see you at the workshop.
