Application forms are now available for Sports Shooter Academy VI, which will be held April 8 - 12, 2009 in Southern California.

The Sports Shooter Academy is a 5-day, hands-on shooting workshop that features a wide variety of NCAA Division I sports events, including: Track & field, baseball, volleyball, tennis, water polo and softball. Additional sports on the workshop schedule include boxing, beach volleyball, lacrosse and horse racing.

Classroom topics tentatively on the SSA VI schedule include portraits and location lighting; getting the most out of your speedlites; professionalism, business practices and ethics; digital workflow; and using remote cameras.

Participants in the Sports Shooter Academy will have three full days of shooting events throughout Southern California. Faculty members will be present at all events, offering their insights, shooting tips and any other help participants need while covering these sports. Each evening SSA participants will review their work one-on-one with the faculty who will help them edit and select photos that will be shown in the daily slideshow. The best photo of the day will be recognized and awards will be given out at a Sunday brunch (included in the registration fee) for the best single photograph and the best body of work made during SSA VI.

Sports Shooter Academy VI is bring generously sponsored by Nikon which will have tech reps at the workshop and will have a wide variety of equipment for participants to check out and use at the various events. D3, D300 and D700 DSLR bodies, lenses from wide angle to 600mm and speedlites will all be available for participants to check out and shoot with during the workshop.

Think Tank Photo and Samy's Camera will also be supporting Sports Shooter Academy VI.

Without the help and generosity of these companies, I could not hold this workshop at reasonable registration fees.

The goal of the Sports Shooter Academy is to give students and working photographers an opportunity to shoot real sports events under the guidance of a faculty of award-winning photographers, to learn new techniques, look at sports photography in a different way, to grow professionally and network with fellow photographers from throughout the country. With the cooperation of the NCAA Division I Big West Conference, participants will have the opportunity to shoot events at Cal State Fullerton, U.C. Irvine and Cal State Long Beach.

Part of the application process is a 15-20 image portfolio, which should include just your best work. The images in your application portfolio do not need to be strictly sports. Any images as long as they represent your skills and best work is acceptable for your application portfolio to this workshop.

SportsShooter.com members
SportsShooter.com members should make a "Hidden Gallery" for their application portfolio, list that link on the form and submit it via email.

Non-SportsShooter.com members
Non-SportsShooter.com members can list a personal website or on-line gallery of their work on the application form and submit it via email. If you do not have a personal website or gallery, you must email the form AND submit a hard copy along with a CD portfolio via "snail mail".

Additionally a short essay is required which should include your background, brief work history in photography and/or journalism, why you want to attend SSA VI and what you hope to take away from the experience. There have been instances in the past where applicants have been accepted into this workshop just on the strength of their application essay. Needless to say, this is a very important part of the application process.

Student applicants need to list a member of their school's faculty or advisor.

The registration fees for Sports Shooter Academy VI are:
• Students: $349.99
• Working Photographers/SportsShooter.com member: $550
• Working Photographers/Non-SportsShooter.com member: $600

At this writing, the SSA VI faculty will include: Robert Hanashiro, USA TODAY staff photographer and Sports Shooter founder; Matt Brown Southern California freelance photographer; Wally Skalij, Los Angeles Times staff photographer and Myung J. Chun, staff videographer with the Los Angeles Times. Additionally, several more faculty members will be announced in the coming weeks once they are confirmed.
