Sports Shooter Academy VI, featuring Division I sports events, will be held April 8 - 12, 2009 in Southern California.

The 5-day, hands-on shooting workshop will feature a variety of college sports: baseball, track & field, softball, volleyball, tennis, rowing and water polo.

Additional sports on the workshop schedule include: boxing, beach volleyball and horse racing.

"Words fail me about how incredibly awesome the Sports Shooter Academy is!" said SportsShooter.com member Jenna Tower from Berkeley, CA, "I have been to two and I have learned more in those few days with the faculty then I really did in the months of photography school. The workshop encourages you to be your most creative and to think outside of the box that photographers have a tendency to get stuck in."

Classroom sessions on the SSA VI schedule include sessions on portraits and location lighting; professionalism, business practices and ethics; digital workflow and using remote cameras.

Participants in the Sports Shooter Academy will have three full days of shooting events throughout Southern California. Faculty members will be present at all events, offering their insights, shooting tips and any other help participants need while covering these sports.

"The faculty is always high energy, motivating, inspiring, approachable, knowledgeable and successful working pros, said SportsShooter.com member and student Octavian Cantilli who attend SSA V and the recent Sports Shooter Academy Boot Camp '08.

Each evening, participants will edit their work under the guidance of The Academy faculty and receive one-on-one critiques. The best work of the day will be shown and awards will be given to the top photographs.

"The Sports Shooter Academy produces results. I see students come in a little rough around the edges and by the last night's critique session, they get it --- they learn to shoot cleaner and tighter. They look for unique moments and unusual angles. They recognize the importance of effective cropping. The Academy is easily worth twice the price of admission," said Myung Chun, a staff photographer at the Los Angeles Times and a faculty member.

The Sports Shooter Academy was created by Southern California freelance photographer Matt Brown and Robert Hanashiro, USA TODAY staff photographer and Sports Shooter founder. Their aim is to give students and working photographers an opportunity shoot real sports events under the guidance of a faculty of award-winning photographers to learn new techniques, look at sports photography in a different way and to grow professionally. With the cooperation of the NCAA Division I Big West Conference, participants will shoot events at Cal State Fullerton, U.C. Irvine and Cal State Long Beach.

"The workshop faculty and staff were all very helpful and the kind of honest feedback they give is priceless! Great workshop!" said Cal State Fullerton student Kaysha Weiner.

Sports Shooter Academy VI is sponsored by Nikon, which will provide loaner equipment for participants to check out, including their latest cameras, lenses and speedlites. Nikon technical reps will be on-site to help with equipment orientation and answer any questions.

Also providing support to SSA VI is Think Tank Photo and Samy's Camera.

"I've been to four Academies and two Boot Camps," said SportsShooter.com member Allan Campbell from Eagle Web Press / Eagle Newspapers Inc., "And people ask 'Why do you keep coming back?' Simple, it is the people who attend, both staff and students.

"I have made so many friends over the years that I keep in touch with. I have built a network of friends across the country that I can ask questions of, get help from and provide help to. It has made the SportsShooter.com message board actually come alive. These people are no longer just names on the board, they have become friends and colleagues."

As an added bonus, the judging of the Sports Shooter Newsletter Annual Contest will be held in conjunction with SSA VI. Participants in the workshop will be able to watch and listen as the workshop faculty critique the contest finalists and select the top sports photographs of the year. The open judging of the Annual Contest is always a great learning experience with lively debate, sharp comments and praise throughout the session.

Applications and faculty will be announced shortly on SportsShooter.com.

"Not only is the SSA a completely hands on workshop where participants get to photograph a variety of high-level athletes on and off the field of play, Irvine, where it is hosted, is densely populated with athletes participating in almost every sport you can think of that are played in 70-degree weather," added Cantilli.
