On The Sidelines
By Anne Ryan

Well, it's time for me to dust off the cameras. After not working (excuse me, that's working my a-- off 24 hours a day for no pay) for nearly nine months I will be back to work as of August 22nd. I have been pretty much a full-time mom since just before my third son Will was born last December. I will miss my boys, but I am looking forward to seeing all of you again. Please don't hesitate to send me any ideas for this column. I am always looking for new material (no slams please, though). Send ideas to Ryanpix@aol.com.

Miami Herald shooter David Bergman's wife Alice Braga will be performing in her new "one-soul show" called "It's Hard to Be Spiritual When You Feel Bloated". Alice, a satirical writer and performer plays the piano and sings songs she wrote. If you are in the Miami area on September 25th and you're looking for a good laugh, get over to El Habito, 5401 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, 8pm. For more information about the show visit www.AliceBraga.com. Bergman's own website is also up and running with more than 100 images. Check out www.DavidBergman.net.

News from Sports Illustrated: Darren Carroll was married Saturday August 7th in Baltimore to Nell Seiler, a photo editor at the Austin American Statesman (& former USA Today photo editor). John Grieshop is also going to tie the knot this month. Heinz Kluetmeier became a grandpa last March when Cameron Rheineck was born to daughter Erika

Kluetmeier and husband Bruce Rheineck in Madison, Wisconsin. New York based staff photographer Simon Bruty will become Washington D.C. based. He will accompany his wife Bronwyn Latimer as she becomes photo director at U.S. News & World Report. Our thoughts and prayers at Sport Shooter go to Ron Modra and Richard Mackson, whose fathers recently passed away, and to Jim Gund who lost his mother.

Gary Bogdon from the Orlando Sentinel has some news about his good friend, Orlando freelancer Ben Van Hook: "As you now know, our friend and partner in crime is on the cover of the August issue of Orlando Magazine, holding a bottle of bubbly and two glasses. The headline reads: "Wonder what Ben Van Hook does best? See page 36 for details." We all know what he does best, party!, he's holding it in his hands on the cover. Seriously though, it was the annual, "The Best of Orlando" issue, and he was featured because of his RFK award win, for international photojournalism, for the Life Magazine story on the Dominican teen-ager who walked on all fours until a team of doctors from Orlando found him,

and through surgery and prosthetics fittings/therapy helped him to his feet literally. Hook is quoted "It was an experience that changed my life." Along with the cover photo, on the inside page is a shot of him sitting (although it is a dropout) in the studio, and a photo of his from the Life Magazine story. It can be viewed on the newsrack, or at their (magazine) website address: www.orlandomag.com."

Tidbits: Garrett Ellwood who was based in Los Angeles for NBA Photos has just been named team photographer for the Charlotte Hornets. Elsa Hasch of Allsport has changed her byline to just "Elsa/Allsport USA" and will be relocating to St. Louis soon. Though unconfirmed, the word via the grapevine is that Michael Rondou of the San Jose Mercury News has quit the paper to try to get into caddie school. The Contra Costa Times has hired long-time Long Beach Press-Telegram staffer Juanito Holendez to a staff position.
