Luis Sinco Headlines Brooks Speakers Program for March & April 2008

This is the schedule for Brooks Institute's School of Visual Journalism Guest Speaker Series for March / April 2008. The series is headlined by Luis Sinco of the Los Angeles Times.

If you are in the area and interested in attending, please stop by.

All events are free, open to the community, and held at Brooks Institute's Ventura Campus at 5301 N. Ventura Ave. Directions are included below.

Luis Sinco
The Marlboro Marine: More Than a Documentary
Luis Sinco is an accomplished photojournalist with more than 20 years of experience. His career started with small, ethnic community newspapers in Seattle and Los Angeles. In 1987, he got a job as a reporter-photographer with Copley Los Angeles Newspapers. He was a freelance photographer for four years before joining the staff of the Los Angeles Times in 1997. Sinco was part of two Pulitzer Prize-winning teams for the Times -for coverage of the Northridge Earthquake and for the 2004 California wildfires. In 2003 and 2004, the Times assigned him to cover the war in Iraq. He was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for his photo coverage of the battle of Fallouja.

Lindsay Hutchens
Making it Your Own
Lindsay Hutchens, a 2005 graduate from Brooks Institute of Photography, has worked toward establishing herself in the photography and music industries since her sophomore year in high school. Her music photography has been published in magazines including Razorcake, Music Plus TV, and Ninevolt. Lindsay currently works full-time in Lauren Greenfield of VII Photo Agency's studio and has assisted on editorial and advertising shoots, multimedia projects, an award-winning short film and a major television commercial.

A Labor of Love: How Photography Changed My Life.
David LaBelle began his photographic career in Ventura with the Star Free Press in 1970. Led across the country by his cameras and curiosity, LaBelle has worked for more than a dozen newspapers including the Pittsburg Post-Gazette as the Director of Photography and has helped build photojournalism programs at Western Kentucky University and the University of Kentucky. LaBelle’s books, Lessons in Death and Life, and The Great Picture Hunt 2 are used in classrooms all over the world.



All events are free, open to the community, and held at Brooks Institute's Ventura Campus: 5301 N. Ventura Ave.

Take highway 101 to Ventura, then highway 33 toward Ojai. Take the Canada Larga exit off highway 33. Turn left at the bottom of the offramp, then left at the second stop sign. Brooks Ventura campus is the large complex off to the right.
