Never before had Tampa Bay Lightning team photographer and member Scott Audette felt so satisfied after signing for a delivery as he did on Monday morning, June 6, 2005. It was on this day at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Florida that Audette signed for the delivery of six pallets containing 10,000 (a total of 16,000 were printed) copies of his first-ever book: TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING: Winning Ways - The Making of a Championship Heart.

All of Audette's hard work, from photographing the Lightning's 2003 Stanley Cup Playoff run, to doing all the pre-press work on his images in his home office over the last few months have culminated in a 68-page hardcover book with approximately 50 of Audette's images being published in this book authored by prominent Tampa lawyer and philanthropist Steve Yerrid.

"As the Lightning were battling their way through the Stanley Cup playoffs, I could see the makings of greatness and an unforgettable team with the heart of a champion," Yerrid said. "I knew we could turn that greatness, that heart, into something inspirational and I am confident we did that with this book. The players, coaches and staff provided the inspiration in their actions; we just chronicled it in words and images. I believe we created a fascinating book for anyone who believes in dreams and lives with hope."

This book project has been a whirlwind for Audette, beginning in December of 2004 and coming to a climactic close on Tuesday night, June 7, 2005 when 5,000 Lightning season ticket holders received a free copy of the book at StanFest at the Forum in remembrance of the one-year anniversary of the Game 7 Stanley Cup clinching victory against the Calgary Flames.

In between Audette spent countless hours doing all the CMYK's in house. He also did all the separations in house and all the sharpening with Photokit Sharpener. Audette's home office is painted neutral grey and all the lighting when he is working is balanced 5000k.

The press check in Altona, Manitoba.
Seeing this project all the way through, including a trip to Altona, Manitoba in the prairie land of Canada to do the press check at the end of May, 2005, was an incredible learning experience for Audette.

The biggest lesson learned by Audette was this: Make sure your monitor is hardware calibrated. You see, they used a designer whose monitor was not calibrated, and because of that he wasn't seeing the colors as accurately as Audette saw them. Audette had an ICC profile for the press. It was a system that should have worked.

By going to do the press check Audette was able to have the printer make some last-minute corrections, insuring the colors came out the way they wanted. The team and Audette were concerned that the blues that were used throughout the book as a major part of the design would turn out purple.

Fast-forward to this past Monday morning and you can imagine the thrill it was for Audette to hold the first copy of Winning Ways in his hands. "It was pretty awesome. I signed for the delivery and got to open the first box- there was definitely a feeling of satisfaction," said Audette, who then showed a copy to Lighning public relations director Jay Preble. Audette then hand delivered the first copy to Lightning and St. Pete Times Forum President Ron Campbell. "They loved it. They were ecstatic and everyone was really happy with the book," Audette said.

Audette secured 100 copies of the book for himself and was quick to FEDEX copies to his parents and his in-laws. Audette will also be donating many copies of the books to different charities in the area.

"When I was approached about doing this book one thing I insisted on was that profits went to charity. They will be split between the Lightning Foundation and the Yerrid Foundation," said Audette.

Free copies of "Winning Ways" are handed out to season ticket holders at StanFest on Tuesday night, June 7, 2005.
Besides Audette's photographs, many of which were featured in a gallery show in September of 2004 (, there are quotes from the players that helped make the 2003 Lightning season a special one for everyone involved with the hockey club.

"What makes this book unique is the players spoke candidly and shared quotes, most of which match up with the photographs. We sat at a big conference table with all of the quotes cut out on paper. It was like playing paper dolls the way we matched up the quotes with the photos," Audette said.

Looking back on the entire process, Audette is pretty happy with the way things have turned out. "I am a perfectionist and I like to see things done right. If you take control of a project as a photographer you can achieve a product that looks nice and people will respect. This book is so much a part of me. I am happy with the book, although there is always something that I think could have been done better," concluded Audette.

Published by Yorkville Press of New York, TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING: Winning Ways - The Making of a Championship Heart is a 68-page hardcover book. Proceeds from the sale of the book ($19.95 per copy) will benefit The Lightning Foundation and the Yerrid Foundation. TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING: Winning Ways - The Making of a Championship Heart will be available beginning June 8 on and at the end of July on and
