'We Can Dream Can't We?'
Ruminations About the Coming Year

By Darren Carroll

My New Years' Resolutions:
1. Take my Christmas lights down before February.

2. Switch my life insurance category to "non-tobacco user" (Last year's resolution was to quit smoking; you can't switch rate categories until you've been "clean" for 12 months ... ).

3. Learn German.

4. Teach my (hopefully) left-handed 3-month-old son how to throw a breaking ball.

5. Limit my Starbucks intake to 3 per day.

Things I'd like to see in 2005 (at least, the stuff I can say in public), as far as the photo industry is concerned:
1. Editorial day rates increasing for the first time in almost 15 years.(Oh, come on ... we can dream, can't we?)

2. Magazines appreciating the extra time and money it takes for freelancers to shoot digitally, and consequently agreeing to commensurate digital fees, or raising their day rates (oh, wait ... tried that one already).

3. More photographers who appreciate the value of retaining the rights to their images.

4. More photographers registering their work with the copyright office. (Of course, they can only do this if they DON'T sign work-for-hire agreements, or other ridiculous right-grabbing contracts ...)

5. More people who use the "search" function before they ask questions on the SportsShooter.com message boards.

Things I'd like to see in 2005, as far as the sports world is concerned:
1. A PGA Tour golfer smiling when he wins a golf tournament.

2. Steve Williams smiling, period.

3. On the other hand, I think I'd rather see much less of Steve Williams in 2005.

4. An Astros - Rangers World Series

5. An NHL hockey game
