Neil Leifer's Ali-Liston image: Copyright question
Troy Ketsdever, Photographer

->> Does anyone know if there is an active copyright on the famous Ali-Liston image?

The reason I ask is because I saw a framed print for sale and the attribution was "Photographer Unknown". Since I knew that wasn't the case, I suspect that the image is being reproduced and sold without license.

->> Troy- was it black and white or color?

The black and white version is EVERYWHERE and it is by AP. Neil's is in color and his cool son Corey is good at going after the folks who steal the image.

->> Troy- it's a problem- but it's the problem of AP Wide World, and their stuff is ripped off so often it's not even funny. Their stuff is in galleries all over the country, many times sold as sepia toned prints in cheap mats, etc. This is not Neil's image.

->> Brad,

Funny you should mention that. I recently found a picture of mine in a sports gallery at Staples Center. It was a 16x20 remote shot of Shaquille O'Neal and Tim Duncan from last year's playoffs selling for $900 and unsigned by anyone. I suppose it's possible that they got permission from the AP, but I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't. All I know is that I'd love to have a piece of that action at $900 a pop.

->> It always amazes me that people who wouldn't take a dime from an open cash register, think it's ok to copy a photo that they have no legal access to. I'm not talking about the parents who try to scam some extra senior portraits at Wal-Mart.
