Walter Iooss video?

->> A couple of years ago I caught part of a documentary on Walter Iooss on some cable channel that was very interesting. It was an interview type documentary showing how he got started, his passion for photography, the story behind some of his memorable images, etc... It looked liked something from the late 80's/early 90's. I was trying to find a video tape or DVD of it, but can't find it. Does anybody know the name of it and/or where to purchase it?

->> There was an interview on ESPN with Iooss several years ago. It was a funny interview as he related his problems with obtaining press passes as nearly everybody misspelled his name. I've never seen it offered on DVD or tape. I think there was a second documentary on him but I cannot remember just when it aired. I'll keep looking to see if I taped it.

->> It was a nice piece that was shown on ESPN during a Super Bowl weekend if I remember correctly. I caught the last part of it and if I would have known it was on, I would have taped it. Right after it was on I contacted the production company and ESPN and they both said they knew of no plans to re-broadcast it or of any availability on tape.

->> I know for certain that there was a program on ESPN about Walter Ioose several years ago that was made in connection with a book of his baseball photos titled (I think) "Diamond Dreams". It was a really great show. It showed him shooting at games and location portraits and then the finished photos.

Does anyone else here remember this show?

I was just getting into photography then and it was very inspirational. I'm sorry that I don't have a tape of it.

->> I'm not sure if this is the same story I saw on him. I remember it not being of high budget and Walter's hair wasn't that gray. I remember him telling the story of how Dave Parker wanted to kill him for taking a photo of him as a Pirate smoking in the dugout and how he jokingly asked Reggie Jackson before a game to look his way if he hit a home run during the game. Jackson hit a homer and to Walter's surprise, Jackson remembered and posed for him! Also, how he knew what he wanted to do with his life when his dad took him to a Giants football and the second he looked through his dad's 300mm....
Is this the same one you guys saw?

->> Yes, there were two shows run on ESPN. One featured football and the other featured baseball. I did get to tape the football episode and I seen the baseball one at Clarkson's workshop.

->> These two one-hour long features on Walter came out on ESPN in 1997. They are fantastic- especially the baseball one. Heston- the video you are talking about is the same one as all those stories are in the baseball film.

Several copies leaked out for "educational purposes". Jim McNay and Joe Gosen show clips of the baseball video every once-in-awhile in the classes they teach at Brooks Institute. In fact- Joe showed some of it just two months ago when I was in his class to do a little talk- it's fantastic.

The pictures, the stories and the interviews all make this video one of the best of it's kind ever made. If you get the chance to see it- DO IT- you won't be sorry.
