D2h rubber is peeling
Robin Loznak, Photographer
Kalispell | MT | USA | Posted: 10:41 PM on 03.16.04
->> The rubber on by two-month-old D2h is peeling off. At this point just the thumb grip piece on the CF cover if falling off, but I suspect more rubber will soon be failing.

I had this same problem with my D1h and I have seen it on many other Nikon D1s. At one point my D2h was nearly bald. I was hoping Nikon had figured out how to keep the rubber in place on the D2h, but I guess not.

Does anyone have an idea on what type of glue to use to stick the rubber back in place?

Robin

So I've cleaned the rubber, and the door, now I just need to sit down to mix the goo and let it do it's magic.

I'll keep you posted.

->> I've had the same problem with my Nikon CoolPix cameras. The rubber grip surfaces eventually fall off. In the past I've used rubber cement, put a coating on the camera side and one on the rubber side, let it dry then press together. That's how they mount the rubber surfaces to table tennis paddles. See here: http://www.paddlepalace.com/ArticleHowTo/gluing.htm

It doesn't hold on forever though as mine is starting to peel off again. I wonder if this will work?

->> Crazy glue does work. It takes a lot of work to get the gorilla snot that Nikon used in the first place off. I found scrubbing with qtips and nail polish remover to work for that then toothpicks to get the mung out of the corners.

A thin coat of gel type super glue you have to work fast of plan out how to get everything in place. Mine had stretched some so I trimmed along the edge where it started to come off first with a scalpel to get a better fit.

Be warned that there are pegs on the door that fit into holes in the rubber that need to be lined up if you are going to try to reglue without removing first.

Have some superglue debonder on hand to clean up any over runs. (available at most hobby shops)

My repair job isn't perfect but it does beat picking at the scab and I don't think it's coming off again.

Weldwood contact cement didn't work worth a darn ;-(

What's up man? Hope the new job is going well. I am in Buffalo this week for the NCAA Tournament with St. Joe's. I got my D2h about three weeks ago and have not been thrilled with it yet. I shot the A10 tournament in Dayton with the D2H and my D1X. My 1x images were much cleaner at the higher ISOs. D2H has been awesome outside shooting spring sports, but wasn't great the one basketball game I shot with it using strobes. The 1/250th shutter sync leaves shoes and hands blurry. Camera feels great in your hands, is fast, and the LCD is cool how you can view the images, though not real sharp. I am still learning how to use it, hopefully I have better results from my images at this tournament. And please don't tell me the rubber will start falling off soon!!!

They are supposed to fix the rubber on the CF door also. Hope they don't get too upset by the superglue.

Mine just started peeling on the CF door (lower right hand corner)last weekend. Well it lasted 16 weeks out of the box, not bad. My guess is Torrance and Melville are going to get hit hard with returns this coming Nov/Dec when everyone's body hits the 12 month point.

Meanwhile I will do a temporary fix.

Cheers.....

I took it to my local shop's repair dept. and they said the only fix that really works is send it to canon and they take off the outer covering, clean it up and install a sort of glue gasket then re-apply the rubber outer covering. they claim to get 1 or 2 a year (high volume store). they wouldn't just glue it back for me. it isn't too bad, so i just forgot about it.

It's fashionable, makes them less prone to theft and until Nikon starts sending me free cameras or pays me to use the ones I have, I don't feel all that obligated to advertise for them on a daily basis. The only body I have never had peeling problems with is my F100. The bottom piece on my D2h began to peel after about 2 months. I am yet to have any of them get so bad that any part actually falls off though, Knock on rubber...

Literally less than a week after skimming over this thread for the first time the rubber on the MB-D100 side-grip of my D100 started to peel off.

Not much I can do other than trim it down and glue it back, but it's a bit annoying to see that it's happening on rigs other than just the D2H

->> So what's the difference between applying the adhesive in Japan and applying it in the US? Same adhesive, right. After the repair I have rarely seen the rubber peeling off. So if it's done right the second time.......well you get the idea.

My guess is that the replacement adhesive must some how be different than the original, even though the replacement adhesive comes from Nikon stock in Japan.

I believe the replacement adhesive is a PSA sheet (Pressure Sensitive Adhesive) of acrylic adhesive, and is die cut. Maybe the original adhesive is different. The lesson learned is that whatever the replacement adhesive/application is, it works.

I noticed the failure mode, at least on mine, is adhesive failure to the rubber, rather than adhesive failure to the metal body. I would not expect cohesive failure with PSA type glue. Since the adhesive fails to bond to the rubber, I suspect the rubber is not clean enough to develop a strong enough bond. So maybe the lesson to be learned is material prep, prior to bonding. It would be interesting to see a Nikon Failure Analysis report on this.

I am sending mine in for replacement in mid October.

->> Crazy glue and its variants will do a pretty good job fixing little parts of the rubber that are beginning to fall off but will not hold an entire bulk (e.g. the door piece) for long. This has to do with the crystallinity of crazy glue.

So crazy glue can be used for touch ups but are not very appropriate for a complete overhaul. For minor repairs, I'd suggest removing the adhesive that Nikon has in place before using the crazy glue. The most important thing that many people fail to adhere to (no pun intended) is to clean the two surfaces as best as possible before applying moderately light amounts of crazy glue. Due to the bonding mechanism of crazy glue, more is not always better.

I have always had to touch up on all my D1 series and D2H cameras every now and then to prevent the entire piece from falling off. I have yet to reattach an entire piece back on to the camera so I can't really offer any suggestions on what to try for a complete reattachment. When the time comes, I'll give every polymer adhesive I have in my labs a shot and will let you guys know if there is this one "magic glue" afterall.

I figure if it can take a beating on the ice it will last on the camera. I've pretty much taped up everything I think will eventually peel or any little doors or flaps I don't use. I tried crazy glue, expoxy, and rubber cement. As soon as I got outdoors in the sun, the rubber would start to come up again.

Custom cut the gaffers tape and save yourself the heartache.

Since the area to be glued is right on the CF card door it is near the more sensitive parts. He recommended Pliobond which is a brown jar of really stinky paste and it looks like the label is from the 1930s. It stayed on for a couple months, now it's off again, it doesn't react well with with extreme weather conditions, heat or cold. I might try gaffers tape this time around, but when else will I get a chance to use my lifetime supply of Pliobond??

The reason they gave me is that the rubber absorbs the sweat from our hands and after a while the sweat loosens up the glue.

It is annoying but while they replace the rubbers for free I'm not that upset. I guess it is a trade off for having the comfortable grip feel.

They don't replace the battery door rubber, they just replace the door.
