1D RAW file problems
Erik Seo, Photographer
Park City | UT | USA | Posted: 4:42 AM on 03.12.04
->> OK, so I have a problem. I'm trying to convert some of my raw files from a shoot. They do not show up in the Canon RAW image conversion program when I select the folder. When I select the images individually I get this error: "An unsupported image format is included in the file save."

I'm stumpped. No idea where to go here. I tried to open the RAW tiff file in PS7 and it just opens up a 192x288 thumbnail. I don't have CS, so I can't give that a shot.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!
These were the best shots of the shoot and I can't get them!!!!

->> What firmware version is the camera on? 1.4? Did you update your software on your PC/Mac?

->> Are they straight from the camera or did you open them in photoshop and saved a syou closed? I once got that message because I opened up the raw image in photoshop as a tif (I guess), played with color/contrast and saved it. No save as, just clicked to close.
If you are still having problems straight from the camera, try to reload software.
Best of luck

->> Erik:

Have you viewed or rotated these raw files in any other software other than the Canon 1D software? Rotating the thumbnails in the wrong software will cause the file to be written in its new orientation and will ruin the RAW file.

->> Brian may be onto something. Are you using Canon's Raw Image Converter or File Viewer Utility?
Out of curiosity, how often do you shoot raw files?

If your camera is at the latest firmware version (1.4), but you are using the older Canon software from a couple years ago (Raw Image Converter), update to the latest software at the Canon download site:
http://www.powershot.com/powershot2/customer/driverdown.html
It's possible that the older software will not read images created with the latest firmware.

->> If you havent already used up your 30 days, try downloading the free trial of photoshop 8 (CS) and use its raw converter. Canon software never worked for me and as a result for a year, I never shot in RAW. Now that I spent the 150.00 for CS I am shooting everything in RAW.

You can find the free trial here:
http://www.adobe.com/products/tryadobe/main.jsp

Good luck

->> what card and card reader are you using. sometimes the card and reader are not totally compatible even if they are from the same maker. this has happened to me, a simple firmware upgrade needs to be done by the manufacturer. the reason why a small thumb may show up but not a decoded image is because the image file is corrupted but for some reason the preview thumb survives.

->> I have no idea what I did to them, I though I just dl'd them like normal off the card. The others seemed to be fine from the shoot so I really don' tknow what went wrong.

Newest firmware. I had not changed them in PS or anything.

->> The fiel you sent me was too small to be the original RAW file. It cam through as a normal TIFF file. I couldn't do anything with it as far as aquiring it like a RAW file. Sorry.

Good Luck,

->> Monty, that was what I had. I don't see how it could be too small to be a raw file, same filesize as the rest of them.

->> Erik, Do you have RescuePro or some software similiar and tried to recover the file from the CF card? I grabbed an image off a CF sometime ago did some corrections to it and accidently closed it to the CF card instead of saving it to a folder and then could open the file. Anyway I was able to recover it with RescuePro.
