->> From the Liverpool FC website: "Rick Parry last night revealed that Liverpool Football Club is planning to embark on a summer tour to the United States of America.
Although nothing has yet been finalised, the Reds Chief Executive told shareholders at the club's annual general meeting that a visit to the east coast of America has been pencilled in as part of the team's preparations for the 2004/05 season.
More details are expected to be revealed later this month.
The club have toured America on four previous occasions, the last being during the summer of 1964." |

->> I've heard that this'll be part of this summer's ChampionsWorld series. Manchester United has signed on for 3 games (Soldier Field and Giants Stadium are 2 of the venues) and Glasgow Celtic will be back for two games. Several other teams are also in negotiations. Real Madrid is likely to make an appearance, possibly as part of the MLS All-Star Game as SUM (MLS's marketing spinoff) ramps up to compete with ChampionsWorld.
There should be no shortage of top level soccer in the US this summer. From Freddy-mania in MLS, to the various summer tours of world clubs, to the start of qualifying for the 2006 World Cup. It'll be interesting to see what the Womens national team does to get ready for the Olympics, hopefully Joe Cummings can put together enough sponsorships to bring back the WUSA 2.0 in 2005. |

->> Here's what I've pieced together. The only "confirmed" game is the Forest/DC United game.
Wed Jul 14 - Nottingham Forest at DC United
Fri Jul 23 - Glasgow Celtic vs Porto in Foxboro, MA
Sat Jul 24 - MLS All-Stars vs Real Madrid (rumor -> New York area)
Sun Jul 25 - Manchester United vs (rumor: Bayern Munich) in Chicago, IL
Wed Jul 28 - Glasgow Celtic vs Manchester United in Philadelphia, PA
Fri Jul 30 - Glasgow Celtic vs Inter Milan in Toronto, ON
Sat Jul 31 - Manchester United vs (rumor: AS Roma) in East Rutherford, NJ
- Real Madrid will play a second "west coast" game as part of their agreement with Soccer United Marketing (SUM).
- Liverpool will play 3 games in the "last 10 days in July" in Boston (sic), New Haven (Porto), and Washington DC (Inter Milan).
- UEFA's Euro2004 runs from 6/12-7/4 in Portugal
- ChampionsWorld will hold a press conference on March 18 detailing teams, dates, and locations. |

| ->> Good, because they ain't coming to Denver. One good thing for you is that part of Kroenke's buying the Rapids from Anschutz includes a commitment to build the Rapids their own stadium. Once that's in place (2006 or 2007) you should start seeing US Men and Women national team games as well as getting in line for MLS All-Star games and MLS Cup finals. |

->> Not a great fan of the US myself, loved NY, but wasn't taken with San Francisco. Can't say I'm excited at the prospect of New Haven (where the F is that?) and Washington (liable to want to go to the WH and knock-off that war-monger). Boston sounds cool, should be a few Scousers knocking about there.
If it was down to me we'd play our pre-season matches in Bangkok, Tokyo, Maurtius, Prague and NY. Or anywhere I fancy a holiday!
If it comes off it would be nice to meet up with some of you guys over there. Been over twice last year and bumped into one member (recognised by his SS cap!). |

->> Hey David, I was in England in November/December on my way to/from the WYC in UAE. I was unable to get photo creds at either Anfield (the horrible 'pool vs Steau UEFA Cup tie) or Goodison (the Man City game where Claudio Reyna never took off his warmups), so I wound up watching them both from the stands.
Boston. The game will really be in Foxborough, about 20 miles south of downtown at Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots (NFL) and New England Revolution (MLS).
New Haven, Connecticut. The venue will be the Yale Bowl.
Washington, DC. RFK Stadium. A run down stadium with still has some of the best sightlines I have ever seen. It's only real tenant is DC United (or DC Adunited if you're into the Freddy Adu frenzy) of Major League Soccer.
Let me know if you make it across the pond for any of the games. |

Is your information about Liverpool FC confirmed? Is there someone I can talk to about getting a photo credential for the DC area game?

->> Francis, I doubt any of the ChampionsWorld stuff will be "confirmed" before the March 18th press conference. Just contact the PR staff at http://www.championsworld.com and make sure you're on their email/media list. Last year all credentialling was handled directly by ChampionsWorld. It was more European than American style credentialling. You got a CW series card, and then you get match tickets for the events you're allowed to cover. At least that's how they handled it last year. If the DC game happens to be a doubleheader with DC United (who host Dallas on 7/31) then I suspect MLS/DCU credentials will also work.
The Liverpool info I have is purely rumor. (or rumour for David). But it is a decent enough source, and fits in with other info I've gleaned. |

2004 ChampionsWorld Series Schedule Announced
Seven of the Best Teams in Europe to Participate in Nine Game Schedule
MOONACHIE, NJ – ChampionsWorld CEO Charlie Stillitano announced the 2004 ChampionsWorld Series schedule on Thursday, unveiling an incredible string of matches to be played by seven of the world’s best club teams at seven premier venues across the United States and in Canada in July and August.
Highlighting the 2004 ChampionsWorld Series is the return of Manchester United to America this summer for three games. The reigning Premier League champions will kick off their schedule with a match against Germany’s Bayern Munich at Chicago’s Soldier Field on July 25 before meeting Celtic at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field on July 28. United will wrap up their pre-season in the United States with a high profile matchup against Italian league leaders AC Milan at Giants Stadium on Saturday afternoon, July 31. While in the United States, Manchester United will base their training operations at the Nova Care Complex, training home of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Joining United atop the ChampionsWorld Series marquee are defending UEFA Champions League holders AC Milan, who will face a strong test from a pair of Premier League teams. The current Serie A leaders will bring the top-ranked club team in the world to meet Manchester United at Giants Stadium on July 31 in the Series’ spotlight attraction, which will be shown live across the country on Fox Sports Net. Following that, the six-time European Cup winners will bring their star-studded lineup to Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field for a matchup against Chelsea on August 2. The return of AC Milan marks the third consecutive year that the Italian club has partnered with ChampionsWorld on a tour of the United States.
Celtic, currently leading the race for the Scottish Premier League title by a wide margin over cross-town rival Rangers, will kick off the 2004 ChampionsWorld Series with a return to Seattle where they will face off against English Premier League high-fliers Chelsea in Seattle on July 24. The English Premier League will provide the opponent for Celtic’s next two games as well when the Glasgow club meets Liverpool at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Connecticut, on July 26 before the match against Manchester United on July 28. Celtic will conclude their four-game tour with a match at Toronto’s SkyDome, where they will meet AS Roma on July 31.
London’s Chelsea, who have become one of the most exciting teams in England since acquiring a roster of dangerous players over the course of the last year, will feature in three games this summer. Following the Series opener in Seattle on July 24 against Celtic, Chelsea will help introduce Heinz Field in Pittsburgh to international soccer with a match against AS Roma on July 29. The Blues will end their tour with a Monday night football encounter at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on August 2. Chelsea will use the Pittsburgh Steelers Training Complex as their base of operations during the tour.
AS Roma, currently engaged in a dogfight with AC Milan for the Italian Serie A title, will appear three times in the 2004 ChampionsWorld Series. After opening their schedule with a July 29 game in Pittsburgh against Chelsea, the Rome club will head to Canada for the much-anticipated match against Celtic at the SkyDome on July 31. Roma will finish with another strong test from a Premier League club when they play Liverpool at Giants Stadium on Tuesday, August 3.
Liverpool Football Club will make their first appearance in the United States in decades when they meet Celtic at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Connecticut, on July 26. The four-time champions of Europe will meet AS Roma in their final ChampionsWorld Series match of 2004 on August 3 at Giants Stadium.
Tickets will go on sale to the general public beginning March 30 for all games except the August 3 match between Liverpool and Roma at Giants Stadium. Tickets for that match will be available to the general public starting April 13. For more information about tickets before they go on sale, fans can call 800-380-3208. Complete schedule and ticket information can be found at http://www.championsworld.com.
Fox Sports will broadcast each of the 2004 ChampionsWorld Series matches live across America, with the matches also airing on Spanish-language Fox Sports Espanol. |

American Airlines, flies from London/Gatwick to all the cities listed on the schedule,if you stay on American for all the flights it should be pretty cheap, booking earlier the better. You can take trains for the Phillie-Rutherford portion.
Hope you like to fly. |

->> Need to sit down with a map and work it all out. BTW Liverpool will announce a third match, probably Porto.
Accreditation to any Premiership match, let alone Anfield, is tough because of the hand-cuffed Premier League Licence we have to work under. If you're coming over give me a shout and I'll see what I can do.
See you all in the Summer! |

->> David:
You can fly either American Airlines or United Airlines from Chicago to Bradley Int'l Airport (Hartford/Springfield) fairly easily. United has at least four daily non-stops, American has three daily non-stops that I know of.
I fly out of Bradley (Hartford) for most of my travel, it is small, but not a bad airport.
When booking, the airport code is BDL |

->> Scally,
The stadiums aren't bad, but the backgrounds are awful in comparison to ours, there is high walls behind the pitch and the fans sit 'above' the pitch.
I'd forget the opening game in seattle, it will take to long to fly back the next morning for the scum game in chicago (although we'll have to do chelski anyway), The others are really easy, the key to the US is just hire a car wherever you go. philli and washington are about 3 hrs drive apart (me and subs did it last year) and hartford isn't that far from boston by car.
You might be able to do a share with one of us, whoever goes. |

Not looking forward to it, heard all sorts of horror stories from snappers flying in the US, it's turned into a complete Police State since 11/9. Want to get in and get out ASAP. Makes you realise how relaxed and easy-going the UK is!
Not sure the US, outside of NY, will be able to cope with the travelling Scousers, will be funny to see. |

->> Nah,
US is fine, just a few more security checks and airport staff with no humour ! the best thing is you can take pretty much everything as hand luggage, no squeezy jet rules !
Travel and accomodation is cheap, just stay in the main hotels, book car hire, ra ra ra... I wish I was going because yes the travelling scousers will be something the US will never believe !! unfortunatley I will have my feet up before going to hell (athens olympics) |

---
Creds in England can be a pain. At least the good folks at Liverpool were kind enough to store my camera bag in the media room when my credential arrangements fell through for a UEFA Cup tie(I bought a scalp from a tout). The only game I did get to shoot was a Champions League game. I was unable to get creds for EPL games.
Flying in the US is not that much different than in/out of Engerland. Just use common sense. |
