All Summer Interns.

->> Let's shine the spotlight on ALL of the ss.com members that have summer internships coming up in 2004 so they all can receive some pats on the back ...
So if you have an internship, let us know here. Maybe this will be a good way to network with some folks in the area you'll be working so you can get a little info, knowledge on the area, places to live, to hang out, etc.
CONGRATS to all of you ss.com members that will be interning some place next year!
(NOTE: If you're still looking for a position, don't post here! Stay on topic so you don't get a "huh"! The classifieds is the place to list positions open and wanted.)

->> I remembered this post from earlier, but I wanted to bring it back up now that its about time to start heading to those internships.
I'll be at the Patuxent Publishing Company in Maryland at the end of May, but most likely living in the Baltimore area.
Where will everyone else be?
On an another note. I read Jim McNay's story about not getting an internship the second time around. I got into that situation this year. It was so much harder to find one even with two/three previous. I was a finalist for three pretty good ones, but nothing turned out. It was almost spring and I thought I was done. But I decided to apply to a couple more and I ended up getting mine towards the end (from a classified on SS.com, of course). So don't give up! There are still some out there now.

I can also relate to Jim McNay's article. Last year, I sent out a bunch of bunk portfolios and ended up internship-less before I realized what was wrong. However, all ended up for the best. I received an Alexia grant and did some of my best work shooting a documentary project. The project is now hanging in a regional museum and is moving to the Indiana state museum.
Here's the moral: Don't fret when the world gets you down. It may actually be a great opportunity. |

I was recently offered a full-time photo tech position at The Washington Post which I accepted. I plan to work there until I finish school and then see what lies ahead. Thanks to sportsshooter.com for helping me get to where I am going.

->> This is curious: I saw that Jr Shedd got a summer internship at Time magazine, so I clicked on his icon to look at his work (as I would do with anyone else's work I was curious about) and found that I can't open his page; my cursor doesn't turn into the little hand that it used to on one's icon.
What is up with that? Did he close his page? I didn't even know you could do that. I was just curious.
Then again, you know what curiosity did to the cat... |

->> Hey all! Well I basically only applied for one internship this summer (I know I am SUCH A SLACKER) but I wanted to be home for the summer as I am catching up on some credits for school, and also it is the last summer before my sister, Lily, goes to college so I wanted the chance to spend some time with her as well as my youngest sister Ariel (she'll be a junior in highschool). Plus I figure it may be the last time I will ever be home for the summer... Anyway, I applied for an internship at the Rock Island Dispatch/Moline Argus (Quad Cities Iowa/Illinois) and although I didn't get the internship (I was runner up) they did offer me a part time job, approximately 20 hours a week. This actually works quite well with the classes I am taking, so I'm fairly pleased... so I'll be in Iowa shucking corn.. I mean shooting pictures hehehe...
Congratulations to all of you who got awesome internships for this summer! Enjoy them, learn a lot, but also have a great time! :-)

->> What year are most of the people who got accepted into internships?
I've jumped around a bit and am not at a 4 year school. Plus I have only one term's worth of photos for a portfolio. That doesn't seem like enough, especially since 50% of my portfolio is sports, and the other 50% is mainly filler so I don't have a sports-dominant folio. As I've heard from many pros, at this stage, there is no such thing as a specialist. |

->> Hi Jim...
I guess I didn't get accepted as an intern, but I got a part time job. I can tell you a bit about myself. I'm a Sophomore at Cornell University. I know this probably doesn't help but I am in a similar situation in having a lot of sports, and lacking news/feature (the reason I was runner up out of 80 portfolios for the internship I applied for.) Unfortunately I think the paper hired me to shoot... SPORTS... go figure... hehehe... One of the reasons I was hoping for an internship in my hometown was (not only due to the above reasons but also) because I know the place pretty well, and I figured I could cover news quite effectively and learn at the same time. However I know that I will be thrown into some news jobs, and I'm looking forward to those, which is part of my goal this summer. Anyway, not sure this helps, but basically just shoot as much as possible, and your portfolio builds itself :-)

I’m very excited about hanging with SS members Tom Braid, ‘Interpolation Guru’ and Darryl Dyck ‘2003 Canadian Press Photographer of the Year.’ I spent the month of March at the Edmonton Sun for a school practicum and it proved to be an invaluable experience thanks to all the great help from the Sun staff. With that said, I can’t wait for the summer internship to start. |

->> Congratulations to all those out there that have secured full-time and paid summer internships. Not something that is an easy thing to do.
Hey Sean I know that since you came to the Sun back in February that your portfolio has sure "interpolated" to a much bigger size while maintaining quality!! :-) http://www.sportsshooter.com/members.html?id=1245
We are looking forward to having Sean here in Edmonton this summer where he can continue to burn up the pages with his great art. I finished and sent out the June schedule last night to the staff and Sean is on it so he got one too. I still remember getting my first sked from a daily where I was listed on it full-time. It was cool to just stare at it. Staying on the future skeds is where it gets tough!!!
This is an exciting time of the year for many new shooters out there, good luck to all and as the farmers say, "Go out and make as much hay as you can while the sunshines!" For you guys/girls that would be between the start and finish dates of your placements.

After that didn’t workout the next place I could think of where the folks would be, well folks, was the northern Midwest. I’ve since been accepted as the summer intern at the Grand Forks Herald, in Grand Forks, North Dakota. I can’t wait to hit the road. Something tells me that I won’t be needing that “I spent my first two Globe paychecks so I don’t get in a wreck or get an ulcer” GPS system that I bought for the streets of Boston last summer, this summer in Grand Forks.
