The natural is probably my favorite. |

Keeping with the Indiana theme, "Breaking Away" comes up as a close second. |

->> Scott- Kudo's to you for mentioning the VERY underrated "Cobb". This movie only played in a few theaters for a week in my area and went straigt to video.
VSERY strong choice.
As a kid I never missed "Pride of the Yankees" when it ran on the local UHF channel. |

->> More often than not, sports movies are pretty bad. But there are a few classics, including:
Breaking Away (one of my all-time favorites)
Bad News Bears
Rocky
Lou Gehrig: Pride Of The Yankees
The Stratton Story
Trouble Along The Way
The Great White Hope
Jim Thorpe: All American
Chariots Of Fire
Raging Bull
Rollerball
The Longest Yard
Kingpins
Slap Shot
I've never seen the Richard Harris classic, "This Sporting Life," but it's on my list of things to watch.
Honorable mention:
Number One (If only for Charleton Heston getting sacked by the entire Dallas Cowboys defense on the last play)
Tin Cup
The Natural
Hoosers
The Sandlot
Field Of Dreams
Victory
The Legend Of Bagger Vance
Without Limits
Prefontaine
Rudy
Karate Kid
Eight Men Out
Guilty Pleasures:
Oxford Blues
Rocky II
Karate Kid II
Happy Gilmore
That's about all that pop into my head right now. There are probably a bunch of great ones that I didn't think of. Oh yeah, what about Ben Hur? Doesn't Chariot Racing qualify as a sport? That would have to go right to the top of my list.
There aren't enough good football movies, that's for sure. |

Dave, I can't believe I forgot to mention Rocky... I heard something about a DVD box set of all of them being released soon... That just may end up on my Christmas list. ;) |

Haven't seen that one for a really long time, but I remember liking it I think.

Oh, and "Bull Durham" is not too bad, either. |

"Bull Durham" and "A League of Their Own" (Gotta thing for Geena Davis) never fail to grab my attention either.
A friend had to twist my arm into watching "Remember the Titans" and I haven't stopped thanking him since.
"Heaven Can Wait" was just on the other night. I probably hadn't seen that in 15 years. Good show.
AH! Cast my vote for Ben Hur as well! Rubbin' is racin'!!! |

GRAND PRIX starring James Garner. Absolutely INCREDIBLE camerawork.
LE MANS starring Steve McQueen
DAYS OF THUNDER starring Tom Cruise
HEART LIKE A WHEEL starring Bonnie Bedelia as NHRA drag racer Shirley Muldowney
AMERICAN GRAFFITI featuring some of the greatest drag racing scenes
Cult classics such as;
TWO-LANE BLACKTOP
VANISHING POINT
WHEELS OF FIRE
AND,
The BEST car chase scene ever; Bullitt starring Steve McQueen. When you have a Mustang vs a Charger, that is a sport... |

Bull Durham (not only is a great movie but the real team ain't half bad)
Field of Dreams (the epitome of baseball as a religion...like it should be)
Slap Shot (I remember it being on broadcast TV, but that doesn't make it a bad movie)
Btw, did anyone else notice that there are a lot more great baseball movies? |

->> "Rad", starring Bill Allen, Lori Loughlin and Talia Shire. Produced by Talia Shire, directed by Hal needham (right after "Smokey & The Bandit"). One of Talia's stepsons, John Schwartzman, shot 2nd unit on it (all the great action sequences before/after), and he's now DP on films like Armageddon.
If you haven't seen it or heard of it, you may not care for it. The acting wasn't great, but the riding sure was. |

->> Aaron,
Just saw your "BMX Bandits" list. Actually, that movie was released in Aussie under the name "BMX, The Movie". I have copies of both. Comparing that to what Kidman does now (e.g. Moulin Rouge) is like comparing Spike Jonze' first home videos to what HE makes now (e.g. Being John Malcovich). But they're fun to watch in the way the "Anna Nicole Show" is. |

Where was my head? I have watched this movie so many times it just seemed to have blanked out of my head.
Anyone else see the documenty "Hoop Dreams"? Nice flick, but I still have to keep SlapShot at the top of the list , with the Natural a close second.
(OK, so I like Robert Redford in sports movies...sorry) |

->> Breaking Away, plus a later flick, also by Steve Tesich called American Flyers-plot as thin as cheap toilet paper and some technical and rules inaccuracies (As a cycling official, these never could have happened) But the photography shot during the old Coor's Classic Stages is great...my calf makes a cameo appearance in one scene! (No screen credit though)
And, being from Iowa...Field of Dreams... where its heaven
unless it's snowing, sleeting, hailing, etc.
I only live about 40 minutes from the field |

->> Still have not seen Z-Boys, Story of Dog Town (Santa Monica) the documentary about skater scene in late 60's, early 70's, but I'm sure that will be one of my alltime favs once I see that. I was a Z-flex guy from way back, even before wide came in. Let's see, Z-flex fiberglass stick, ACS 480(?) trucks, and first crop Road Riders. Now that was a smooth ride.
But also blast-from-the-past sports flick that I recall being very cool was Steve McQueen's "On Any Sunday." The motocross racing scene. That was cool. |

->> "Dogtown & Z Boys" is fantastic. Stacy did an AMAZING job of getting real footage of those guys. The reason Skateboarding is what it is today thanks to those guys and Stecyk's photos and writing. There would be no Tony Hawk if there hadn't been Tony Alva, Stacy Peralta, Jay Adams et al. If you haven't seen it, RENT IT.

As I write this more and more come to mind, many having already been mentioned. One that wasn't(at least that I can recall) is "61", I really liked that one. Also, for mind-numbing, stupid humor, I highly recommend "Out Cold".Some of the snowboarding scenes are pretty good, and the toilet humor should bring a smile to your face !! |

Wasn't that Eddie Fiola and Martin Aparijo (sp) in Quicksilver? Yes, Rad was well, for lack of a better term, "rad". Riding was good but the acting wasn't. Which reminds me. A clip for BMX Bandits....
PJ-"Listen, Goose. Ya know what we got to get? A bmx track. Ya know, somewhere the the kids could ride with no hassles"
Goose-"Great idea, shall we get it before or after we have our bikes gold plated?
PJ-"Other areas get them, why can't we?"
Goose-"Listen PJ, next thing you'll tell me is you beleive in the Easter Bunny."
PJ-"Doesn't everyone?"
Goose-"Race you to the mall."
PJ-"See you there."

Star of the film, Bill, had to have his hair died brown because Eddie wouldn't bleach his. I got to ride with Eddie a year or two ago on the halfpipe at Vans Orange. No camera, just bikes. |
