Help Needed: Canon 1d MK iii repair
Kenya Allen, Photographer

->> During a recent baseball game, I discovered (almost the hard way) that my lens would not lock into place on a 1d MK iii body that I purchased used about 2 years ago. It appears that the pin that locks the lens is stuck and won't pop out. After searching the net, saw a suggestion to try a tiny drop of machine oil on a toothpick, but no luck. Sent it to CPS for a repair estimate, and out of warranty bill would be $600+, for a camera that I bought for under $900. Anyone know of an alternative to CPS who could possibly fix the issue at a lower cost? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

->> Try Toshio Fuji Shima of TF Camera Repair Service in East Brunswick, NJ. email: tfcrservice@yahoo.com , (732) 238-8806 he is a former CPS repair tech now running his own shop. He has an extensive inventory of Canon parts does excellent work at fair prices.

->> This old trick might work in a pinch to get a lens to mount temporarily:

Either way, you've got either a bent locking pin or a bent mount that will need to get repaired.

->> John and Collin: Thanks for the recommendations- I will give them a call.

Kevin- thanks for the thread link. Will try it real quick when I get it back from Canon, but will plan to send in somewhere else either way.

->> I'll second all the recommendations made so far.

But what I would really like to know is what work Canon proposed was needed to account for a $600 charge (for what I think is a minor repair).

->> KEH has a 1D Mark III for $487 and you could buy this, sell the charger for $100, and be up and running again for $387.

You could still have the repair done on your malfunctioning Mark III at some point, but this would remove the element of time pressure from that transaction.

->> Might almost be worth the upgrade to a used Mark IV rather than sinking money into a III. I've used both. Bigger files, lower noise, video, same batteries. Prices are down a lot on Mark IV's and they will have a longer repair life.

->> Kevin, got the body back from canon today, and the tip from the tread worked like a charm. Will explore my long term options and figure something out. Michael and Simon- thanks for the advice as well- will definitely take into consideration.

->> @ Al- Canon didn't give much information. The estimate was $279 for Out of Warranty Major Labor Charge, and 314.81 for parts. No mention of what parts were needed.

->> Ironically I now have a 1D Mark III that needs to go to CPS in the morning. The "select" button on the wheel in the back stopped working and the center AF point will not register. Perfect.

->> I just called Canon for an update on my 1D Mark III and they are shipping it back to me and stated that it is outside of its service life and will not be repaired (this is not a "not economical to repair" but a rejection of the request). They asked me if I wanted information on the Canon Loyalty Program which, in the moment, was almost too funny for words.

This is day three that the camera has been in their possession, if they were not going to do the work they could have at least called or emailed to let me know. If I have to upgrade all of my cameras anyway, perhaps it is time to give Nikon a chance?
