Looking for info on U.S. Bank Arena, Cincinnati
Jim Pierce, Photographer

->> I will be shooting the NCAA Hockey Regionals at the US Bank Arena, in Cincinnati, next week-end and looking for any info people may have. Specifically shooting positions? any holes in the glass? any upper level positions? will I need a 400 if up top?

Any contacts who might be heading this up is also appreciated.

Jim

->> I got this information tonight:
US Bank Arena 101: I photographed the 2013 NCAA Midwest Regional in Cincinnati and hope they have it better organized this year for those of you who are shooting (I will be shoveling on the ice crew this year instead of shooting…I am on the Cincinnati Cyclones ice crew). There is 1 hole on the glass. It is in a corner on the bench side of the ice (if you're shooting through the hole, the benches are to your left). The glass is HORRENDOUS. I've attached a cell phone pic I took behind one of the nets…the glass looks like this all the way around, of course the worst is behind the nets. The lighting isn't great, rather dim and yellowish. The arena is pretty cavernous since it holds 15000+. When I shot the Regional in 2013, we didn't have wifi, just ethernet cables. You can shoot from the concourse between the lower and upper bowls, that's where I ended up shooting from mostly. I've seen photographers with up to 400mm lenses. I have a Canon 7D (with it's pain in the butt crop sensor), so I've shot with my 70-200mm with 1.4 extender. There is a tiny spot between the benches, I believe, don't know if that will be allowed (probably TV) or if you'll be allowed to shoot from the benches. There are no seats along the glass behind either net. In 2013, security kept booting me from sitting in any empty seat on the glass. There isn't a press box at US Bank Arena. They made a makeshift media work area in one of the corridors in 2013…FYI, our arena tends to be on the cold side. If you want to know more of the nitty gritty, our team photographer for the Cyclones is Tony Bailey Photography. You can check out some of his albums to get an idea of what the arena looks like. Since I'm not shooting, I'm not sure what information will probably be sent to you. I can't believe it'll be in Cincy again next year…plenty of nicer arenas in the midwest.

I agree 100%. I was really hoping it would hop back to Van Andel in Grand Rapids or back to Compton at Notre Dame (what a beautiful rink). Unless Miami or OSU makes it in next year, I don't see any kind of local crowd showing up in Cincy.

->> For those of you that will be in Cincinnati I just spent most of the day at US Bank Arena. The following is what I found out:

1. When you walk through the media door off of Pete Rose way be very CAREFULL. It is very dark and look for the yellow line on the floor about 6' inside the door as there is a 12"-14" step down that you will trip down if you don't see the yellow line and it is dark.

2. The glass is as described above no chance of shooting through it.

3. There is one hole that will be traded off as everyone shares it.

4. The concourse is very high and a 400 would be required, much better than a 300 for sure.

5. Todays food was not bad and plentiful.

6. The arena was very warm, actually got hot for a rink.

7. Lighting is OK...not the best and not the worst and I am not sure if all the lights that are going to be on were as there were many not on.

Should be a fun tourney!!

Jim
