->> As long as you think being successful is just about the quality of your photos you will fail.

Why be just one more photographer on the sideline or covering candidate. That alone should be a clue that you will have a difficult time having anything unique.

Don't follow the crowd to be successful. BE ORIGINAL PEOPLE!!!

As long as you are copying what everyone else is doing you are just a commodity.

He is following the rule of a hobby. Not everyone sees photography as a career.

He began his career covering politics in 2009, covering the U.S. Senate campaign of ophthalmologist Rand Paul. Since then, he has been involved with a variety of organizations and campaigns, including the Arizona Chamber of Commerce & Industry, ASU Center for Political Thought & Leadership, Campaign for Liberty Foundation, National School Choice, Reason Magazine, Western Center for Journalism, and has been published in the Washington Post, Associated Press, Politico, and Forbes."

Doesn't sound like he's selling himself as a hobbyist on his site.

I would suspect that is his full-time job and uses that as the way he gets access to cover politics.

I see a lot of "full-time" photographers who are really employed in the industry they cover in some other role.

Unless I am wrong I think he is pretending to be a pro because he has income in the other job.

->> Most likely he is being supported by family and is just now coming face to face with the reality of having to charge for his work verses giving it away for so long and having people tell him how great he is.

I see a lot of people's heads get big thinking they should be photographers from people that tell them they are great.

Hey we have seen that here on Sports Shooter. A lot of people give away the images to stand on the sidelines. You have to do this a few times to get the access, but you cannot sustain it long term.

He lists on his Linkedin profile as Arizona State Chairman for the Young Americans for Liberty.
https://www.linkedin.com/in/gageskidmore

Now on his Facebook page
https://www.facebook.com/GageS looks like that position ended last summer.

We will see if he is able to switch from shooting as hobbyist to a pro.

The most important thing to learn from this that no matter how sharp your images and great you are technically even billionaire Donald Trump will choose free over your technically superior images if another is available for free.

So if you want to make a living BE ORIGINAL rather than part of the pack of photographers at events. The only ones making money in these packs are on staff or on assignment by a media outlet of some sort.
