HELP — Photoshop CS6 Problem
PJ Heller, Photographer
Christchurch | NZ | | Posted: 12:04 AM on 11.22.15
->> I’ve been happily going along running Photoshop CS6, which I purchased a few years back. I suddenly started seeing a window when launching CS6 about a 30-day CS6 Extended Trial (which I never asked for). I kept using CS6, thinking that when the 30 days was up I would no longer see that window.

Now that the 30 days is up, all I get is a window asking me to buy the extended version or put in my license key. My version of CS6 won’t launch. Unfortunately, I’m 5,000 miles from my office and won’t be back for months, so I don’t have a license key or proof of purchase with me. Adobe is absolutely no help without either of those (if I could launch CS6, I assume I could see my license key).

Anybody run into this problem or have any suggestions how to fix it?

->> When I bought CS6, I had to go to the Adobe Licensing Website to get the serial number issued. When I contacted tech support about CS6 not launching and wanting a serial number, I mentioned something about the licensing website but pretty much was blown off.

Eventually, I found an old log-in for the licensing site (different from my regular Adobe log in) and once there, was able to automatically retrieve the serial number. Plugged it into the CS6 window and, voila, problem solved.

I've since stored the serial number in 1Password so I'll always have it with me in case this happens again.

->> Can anyone help me install the latest version of Camera RAW for PS CS6. I currently have version 9.1 but need 9.5. I have gone to the Adobe site and downloaded the MAC version for 9.5 but it does not update.

->> Unfortunately you are going to have to upgrade to Photoshop CC 2015 to be able to use 9.5.

According to the Adobe page for camera raw installers (here:
https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-plug-in-installer.html) 9.1.1 is the last version of CR that was made for PS CS 6.

You can download 9.1.1 for mac from that page.

You're not going to like this, but Adobe announced last July that CR version 9.1 would be the last for Photoshop CS6. If you want newer updates -- such as 9.5 -- then you have to switch to Photoshop CC.

An alternative, according to DP Preview, is if you want PS-CS6 to process cameras made after v9.1 then you have to use a third party DNG converter of the new camera's files to use your CS6's Camera Raw to open them.

->> Colin and Doug,

Thanks. Is it still possible to buy an upgraded version of PS on a disc? I don't want to do the cloud. Thanks.

->> Ric, sorry, but as near as I can tell you will have to go to a cloud subscription.

I read a non-adobe site (so you need to verify this) that said you can ask Adobe to send you current version of the CC software on CD and they will do it, but you still have to have a CC subscription.

I wasn't crazy about going to a cloud subscription at first, but once Adobe changed the plan to $9.99 a month for photoshop and Lightroom I realized it was the same or less money than buying the photoshop upgrade disc when they came every 18 months or so. I've been pleased with the value.

->> Ric: there is no version of Photoshop you can buy anymore; only the subscription option is available. Like you, I'm still on CS6.

You can buy a standalone Lightroom 6 (although I am not sure about getting an actual disc) that is mostly the same as the CC version, and the DNG converter that is equal to ACR 9.5 is not actually from a third party, but is from Adobe itself. Not that the extra step would do great things for workflow speed.
