Photo Mchanic Tagged Photos

->> A fellow photographer introduced this program to me the other day (I've been using Photoshop/Lightroom to work on my photos) and I'm interested in it simply to make my organization and everything else easier.

The main reason I'm thinking about it is because he's able to tag the photos in his camera, so when he uploads them he can go straight to editing the ones that were tagged in camera, rather than scanning through them all.

I believe he said he did that through a lock feature on the 1D MKIV? Which then 'tagged' the photo. That way when he uploads them he just goes to a tagged section? And there are the photos he tagged in camera during the game.

Does anyone know if this is able to be done with the 5D Mark III? If I can just rate the photos with 5 stars and it'll work the same way? Or if I can assign a specific button to do what he's doing?

I may be wrong about it being the lock button, but I know he's assigning the photo to be tagged to save him from scanning through all the photos once he uploads them, which is what I'm trying to do.

Thanks

On a 1D4, you simply lock the images.

On a 5D3, the rating button defaults to - shockingly - rating images. To lock instead, go into the menus. On the third tools/preferences menu, the bottom items is "RATE btn function" and you can select the button's setting to either rate images or lock them.

I believe you could rate images instead and PM would see the ratings, but they won't show up as tagged and won't download first.

Note for both cameras: if you're writing simultaneously to both cards, it will only lock/tag images on the card you're using for playback.

->> Okay, I thought that was the way to do it, but because it said "protect" rather than "lock" I was worried I might be doing something else. That makes sense.

Good to know about writing simultaneously as well.

I typically erase all my images via the camera, but I'm guessing I can't do that with the locks. Can I erase them all from the computer when it's in the card reader? Or will they still not delete the protected ones either?

Thanks for the help.

I haven't dealt with formatting or erasing cards via computer in a while, but my memory was it would notice locked file for erasing, but not formatting.

->> Kiel,

PM is certainly a powerful program for culling your photos - and yes, it can be set to only ingest tagged/locked images which really helps reduce your process and post-process time. PM has several other features you should become familiar with, such as the Stationary and Code Replacement capabilities. If you think PM's sorting capabilities are awesome, just wait until you start getting into Code Replacements! Depending on what you shoot, there is a service where you can download your Code Replacement text files for College and Pro sports. Code Replacements eases your captioning process immensely. However, if you shoot high school sports, as I do sometimes, you can build your own Code Replacement files fairly easily and is well worth your time to do.

Just another ability PM gives you. Something you can learn via the Web and YouTube when you have a free afternoon.

Some of the other photographers helped me out with the Code Replacement. Didn't even realize the program had a feature like that, it's been very useful.

Wish I knew about the websites that'll auto generate the list for you. Here I was making lists from scratch today. Oh well, live and learn! Great for future reference!

Thanks everyone.
