Anyone using Affinity Photo?
Robert Hanashiro, Photographer

->> Has anyone out there in Sports Shooter-Land been using Affinity Photo instead of PhotoShop CC?

https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/photo/

I have been playing around with it, but the documentation is so spotty that I've spent a lot of time just trying to figure out how to do some very simple things.

I'd love to hear if you like it and is it really a competitor for PhotoShop?

(Possibly a good story for the upcoming August issue of the Sports Shooter Newsletter. If you're interested, please contact me via email.)

Mahalo!

I checked it out when it was in Beta. I thought it had promise, but didn't really play with it a lot. DPP from has been doing more for me lately. It's changed my workflow up a bit, but it's free and once you figure it out it becomes easy to use. It's a Canon product for those who aren't familiar.

Pixsy is also something I've been toying with a bit in Beta. It's an unauthorized use service. It too has promise, but still needs developed more to make it truly worthwhile. It may make a good story too.

->> The skimpy documentation is Affinity's biggest problem. I uninstalled Photoshop and Bridge from my Macs. I'm using Affinity and Photo Mechanic. The raw converter is nowhere near being a replacement for Photoshop/ACR (but I use Lightroom for that) but for the rest of my photo editing needs Affinity has completely replaced Photoshop. (That said, I still wrestle with the lack of documentation and trying to figure out how to use it.)

->> I signed up for the free trial. It is only 10 days. After I downloaded it I did a bit of work on a family picture and saved it. It saves as a proprietary file that photo shop does not recognize. Then I tried Save As to see what else I could save it as...no options were obvious. So much for the free trail. Got to stick what i know works....

I have been using Affinity for about a year, so far I like it, a bit harder to work with than PS, but I only used very little in PS, so I could not see upgrading for the amount Adobe wants.

->> Yep there is Jack.. Thanks to Marc Browning I found it and used it. Since my biggest use of photo shop is correcting and converting raw images I think I will just pay my $20 each month and stick with it.

->> I've been using it for the better part of today and the biggest issues I am having are:

1. It's slow at opening and processing images (I'm using a Mac Book Pro early-2013 and opening 5D IV full resolution RAW files....btw, I bought the 5D IV last week from Roberts....what an amazing camera...I'm in heaven).
2. Affinity seem to require one to "Develop" in order to really use the full suite of RAW processing tools. Developing is a "go get a cup of coffee" process.
3. It doesn't have an equivalent to CS Bridge so I'm using Photo Mechanic. But I've not been able to figure out how to show the adjusted RAW file in the Photo mechanic contact sheet like Bridge would automatically do.
4. I can't seem to figure out if Affinity has a "previous conversion" button. I love in CS RAW how I can use the adjustments I've made from the previous image as a starting point for the next image. Works well when the light is consistent during a shoot or I want to apply consistent processing.
5. Can't seem to figure out how to batch process converting all CR2 images to JPEG.

Any help would be appreciated.

->> Ben,

Affinity's Develop persona is the raw developer. I use Affinity Photo and I like it, but the raw converter is not as polished as Adobe's. For raw conversions, I use LR. Affinity, as far as I know, doesn't have a batch conversion option. PM doesn't update raw files because its previews are built from the file's embedded JPEGs, which isn't being changed.

I use Affinity Photo with PM to quickly process JPEGs on those times that I still work with JPEGs and it works great for that. But all my raw conversions are done with Lightroom.
