->> ...and if you thought flying in restricted areas was bad. This is pretty much insane and could cause some real problems for drone users. A sociopath in the making living in Connecticut built a drone that carried a semi-automatic handgun that he could fire remotely. Check out the video.

->> Yesterday the I-15 freeway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas was shut down along the Cajon Pass in San Bernardino County because a fast growing brush fire jumped the road trapping people and set 44 vehicles on fire along with four homes in the area.

The aerial tankers and helicopters working the blaze -- including dumping water on the burning vehicles -- had to vacate the area for over 20 minutes because there were FIVE drones flying around -- two of them even chased the aircraft.

There have been four fires in SB county during the last month and each time aerial efforts were hampered because of people flying drones.

->> There are legitimate uses for drones. Unfortunately, with the prices so low many amateurs are purchasing them and flying them without the needed training and/or sense/judgment of what may be proper.

I see the use of these aerial devices in journalism, search and rescue, wildfire documentation and commercial applications as viable. However, I'm not so sure that Amazon and other huge corporations will be successful with their drone delivery services. I can see the skies full of these things creating havoc and potentially creating accidents.

I did watch a portion of the Senate Sub-Committee hearing on drone regulations and found it quite interesting, but didn't have the time to watch the entire hearing. I did gather that the FAA and Congress have considerable concern over drone usage without some stiff regulations governing their use.

It will be interesting to watch what happens to these regulations when drones begin to truly impact lives on the ground and planes and helicopters in the air.

We had an instance during our recent wildfires where an amateur flown drone stopped an aerial assault on a wildfire which endangered the fire fighters lives on the ground.

->> Drones are a problem in dense populated areas. I am all for getting different perspectives and footage but these devices can unpredictable and we have seen several instances where people were injured by them.

Because of my profession, I have communicated with FAA because we learned of several drone operators flying these devices within a five mile radius from an airport which is prohibited Recently, we were contacted by the LAX tower to try and locate drones who were operating at or above the 400 foot level and were reported by pilots of incoming airplanes.

One of the FAA regulations prohibits the use of drones at any event with more than 30000 people in attendance.

There have been several incidents where drones interfered with public safety operations and it is not a matter of if but a matter of when something is going to go wrong. In the previously mentioned I-15 multi car fire several of the water dropping planes and helicopters were forced to drop their load away from the fire because there were at least three or four drones interfering with the operation.

As many stated, it is a matter of common sense. There are no specific federal statutes that address the operation of drones, except if it is for commercial purpose (meaning you make money from it) that it has to be licensed and permitted by the FAA. Drone specific statutes in California are almost non existent, except if you operate it in a reckless manner, or use it for illegal purposes. There are several local, state and federal statutes in the works to address this growing trend.

->> What really amazes me is that, these things aren't cheap. So it's not some high school drop out, or homeless wack-job that is flying these things. I mean, unless it's a toy with no camera (and what kind of range would these have anyway), you need to to drop at least a grand, or two to get one of these. And the to have the no-care-attitude to fly it at aircraft and over fire?
