Canon 16-35 f2.8 II out of service?
Scott A. Schneider, Photographer

->> I contacted CPS regarding my 16-35 but was told it went out of service on 12.31.13. Really? I want it checked because it's a bit soft on the far side at some settings. What can I do about it? I'm very disappointed with CPS.

->> Scott, the "EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM" is still a current in-production lens and is on the CPS repair list online.

However the original "EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM" has been out of production for years and unfortunately probably is no longer serviced.

->> I told them it's a version II and gave them the serial number but they said "out of service." I'll check with them again. Thanks for your help.

->> Gray,
They will NOT service version I. We had one that needed a fix last year and were out of luck. Sent it to a place in Madison Wisconsin, but they could only fix it if they could get original Canon parts. We fixed it and then upgraded to the the version II's later in the year. Sorry!

->> Did have a V1 that was destroyed by a dolphin making the perfect hit on an underwater housing and opening it, frying the 16-35 and 5DII inside. Canon replaced the 16-35 with a V2 for $360. Someone was feeling generous I guess @ Canon. I guess it depends on how far gone it is? Not sure, I sent it under my CPS Platinum account and came back with a new in box lens (refurbished)

->> My understanding is that Canon stops supporting (meaning making parts and repairing) gear once the item hasn't been sold for seven years which I am guessing is close or has passed on the 16-35 f 2.8 version 1. Independent repair shops like Midstate or TF Camera Repair Service in New Jersey often buy the parts stock from Canon after they stop supporting the item so they can fix the gear and pick up the business. From Jim's post above, apparently having a platinum account with CPS can help quite a bit in these cases, but I'm guessing it is a case-by-case thing and good for him that it happened.

->> If Canon is not supporting the lens, and the II is still in service, give Midstate Camera Repair in Warwick, RI, a call. Best repair shop anywhere.

->> FWIW I just had my 16-35 II serviced by CPS a couple months ago. This is the version of the lens being sold, so it would be paradoxical if they no longer serviced it. My guess is the person to whom you spoke was mistaken.

->> FWIW - I just sent all of my lenses to CPS NJ. The people checking in equipment simply are not paying attention to the descriptions and are not referencing equipment using serial numbers. I sent them 6 lenses all of which are the most current models. 4 of the 6 lens were checked in as older models and reported "end of life".

Also, on one lens I pointed out on my CPS form that a couple of screws on my 70-200 were loose and would they make sure to tighten them (something included in a clean and check but didn't want them to miss it). They wanted $250 for an out-of-warranty to do that. Geezzzzz.

I spent hours on the phone trying to get everything straightened out. The person I spoke with told me that they had hired someone new. I'm sure their last job was a Sign Spinner at the Liberty Tax Return Store.
