Costco 8x10's
Warren Wimmer, Photographer

->> They (Costco) and Sam's have raised their price per print to 1.79 in the last couple of months. They used to be 1.09 for lots of 100 mix and match. And at Costco, there is talk of them closing some of their labs due to low profit margins. I don't see it, there is always lines at their machines 3 deep to order prints.

Anyone have any less costly source or do I have to go back to Epson and pay outrageous price for ink.

->> I print with a trusty old Epson 4800 and I calculate my material cost to be just over $1.00/sq.ft.. So an 8x10 costs me ~60ยข per print. That's with all genuine Epson ink and roll paper. That's not counting cost of the printer (which paid for itself a long time ago)or my time. Neither is free. I can spit out ~44 8x10s and hour on 16" paper.

I've actually thought about offering printing services. I think I could make some money.

->> Depends how quickly you need them, I use Richmond Pro Lab for most things and their prices are very good, shipping is quick and priced right as well. Of course these are things do not need right away. Sharp Prints in WI is lab found in a search that has good prices and reviews, but haven't had the chance to check them out yet to know for sure.

->> Warren, what did they do instead of say "sorry"? I usually ask for no color correction with my prints, but saw they offered it.

->> All,

Red River paper has done some detailed studies for the cost of ink per print size for various printers

->> The closest Costco to me closed their lab last year. Another one about 10 miles further away kept their lab. They could mail the prints for me to pick up at the closer lab (maybe even to the house?), but 10 additional miles one-way is not that big of a deal to have your print in one hour. And I think the 8x10's were $1.49.

->> Chuck,

You are correct they don't include the cost so if I use the prices of the red river paper I just ordered the following would be a very good cost of self prints.

Printer Epson R2880

4x6
Paper Red Reviver Satin 4 100 sheets (16.47, I bought these while a 20% off sale so if not this would have cost $19.76

Shipping was $7.99 for the entire order which was a fairly large order and included 600 sheets of 8.5x11 so a good price. I will assume I bought these 300 sheets as a stand alone order so 300 sheets with the 20% discount and shipping cost 3x16.47=49.41+ 7.99 shipping totals $57.40/300 so .19 a sheet. they estimate .21 for ink a 4x6 self print cost estimate is .40. I am sure people can find these cheaper but when you look at an 8x10 the following applies

600 sheets of Red River satin 139.96+7.99 shipping $147.95 which yields .246 per sheet. this plus the estimated ink cost of .70 gives a total cost of an 8x10 of $.76 Not bad in my eye.

printing yourself also works well with my workflow and gives me control.

The above RR estimate includes Epson ink cartridges priced at $12.90, which is reasonably close to what I pay.

Jim
