Nikon's New AF-S 300mm f/4E PF ED VR lens: I Like!!!

->> I've been shooting a new lens for the last few days and I am really impressed. While it's taken Nikon a loooooong time to replace their f/4 300mm, it was worth the weight (pun intended) IMHO.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ckwliw6a9k

Here are the Cliff Notes if you don't want to watch the movie:

- uber-fast and a fraction of the cost of the new f/2.8 version.
- seems to acquire as fast as the f/2.8 VRII version even in low light
- new "Sport VR Mode" actually works for shooting sports (who knew?)
- very small size, length, and weight--crazy small
- it will be my go-to 2nd lens for football and my main down-court lens for hoops.
- focuses really close--like maybe 3.5' or so!
- bad news? $2K, but I think it's worth it.

Anyone else tried one yet? Please feel free to post your comments here.

kindest regards, pm-r :)

->> I'm still pissed off about my last one, the old F/4 af-s. Last year I sent it to NPS and paid $350 for them to replace the AF motor (or so they said). Then it sat in the cabinet for a few months before I pulled it out again, long after the repair warranty had expired. Motor squeaked and sputtered and got stuck again after a few minutes, totally worthless. It was worse then when I sent it in. I can't even sell it, which I was planning to do eventually.

->> I wish Nikon would make a 400 of similar size and weight within reason. That'd be a lens I'd buy. I had the old 300. It was a good lens.

->> I saw something on NR last night about them registering a patent for a 24-70mm f/2.8 PF lens. That would be pretty cool!

->> Okay, anyone else got some real-world opinions on this lens? I'm considering renting one for an upcoming shoot, as the total costs for the hire duration is £84 for the new f/4, versus £155 for hiring a 300m f/2.8 Mk II

There's more than enough light at the event I'm shooting to allow for f/4 to be useable; I've hired a 200-400 f/4 in the past, but it was a touch unwieldy... so the new 300mm f/4 - on paper - looks to be a good fit.

If anyone has some experience of shooting sports with this one, do let me know your thoughts.

->> Fantastic lens. It's everything Patrick said. Best of all, I do not need a monopod, which makes it much better for following fast action sports! Combined with D4S is the best.
I hope Nikon decides to do a 400mm lens with the same technology
I have also used the 300 with the 1.4 extender. That also is a great combo, except in dark venues.
