->> Here's a good blog post from the photographer, Mike Simons of the Tulsa World, about the incident.

As far as Mike "cost(ing) us all," the sidelines at the University of Oklahoma are some of the worst out there. If Mike was over the line (and I really can't tell because of the way that they set up gray cloth in the corners of the end zone), I know that he was in good company. The donors, cheerleaders, mascots, police officers, and many other photographers are regularly in the same situation.

If you want to see the field there, at some point, you'll be over the line. I know I have been.

->> Positioning on the football field is always a challenge. For anyone who has shot at U of South Carolina, the end zones are out. That takes all of the photographers and crams them into a smaller area. Not the fault of the school or anyone else, the field/stadium is what it is. The corner is the toughest and most congested spot. U of Georgia has very narrow strips at the end of each end zone, also very difficult. Part of the feel for the place is the tightness of the field. To me, this is a "but for the grace of god" moment. Having also watched some of the travails of photographers shooting basketball it is almost remarkable that there are not more incidents than we see.

OU has now banned photographers from using monopods during home games:

400/2.8 VR ~10 lbs.
D4s ~2.5 lbs.

Lot of weight to handhold for an entire game.

It's pleasant to see that they recognized that the people on the sidelines who are just there to watch made the problem worse. Photographers have a job to do, and we get stuck in crappy spots sometimes because of the people who have no need to be on the sideline.

->> Glad to see they clarified - for the record, has anyone actually seen someone use a monopod seat on a sideline before? I don't think I've ever seen it precisely because it would be incredibly dangerous to players, but I guess it wouldn't surprise me if some people used (or tried to use) them.
