Subject of St. Louis Post-Dispatch photo by Robert Cohen talks about throwing back a tear gas canister while wearing an American Flag T-shirt and talks about that night in Ferguson.

->> When I think of an iconic photo, it would fall to something along the lines of Eddie Adams' photo of of Nguyễn Ngọc Loan executing Nguyễn Văn Lém in 1968 during the Vietnam war; Nick Ut's photo 9-year-old girl running toward the camera from a South Vietnamese napalm attack; the photo of the firefighter carrying the child after the Oklahoma City bombing; photos that have stood the test of time and remain in the memory of those who have viewed them, not necessarily one that was shot less than two weeks ago.

->> Sorry Jeff, but popular culture says you're wrong.

"The photo - taken by St. Louis Post-Dispatch photographer Robert Cohen - has been printed onto T-shirts, re-purposed by artists, even plastered onto cell phone cases. On Twitter, it's been favorably compared to pictures from revolutions overseas - but also falsely cited as proof of violence committed by protesters. "

->> Ditto on the test of time.

Repurposing imagery -- probably without proper licensing that was paid for -- to make a quick buck or bring attention to oneself through artistic alteration does not make it iconic.

Nor do I give much stock to Facebook commenters, bloggers or media that are cutting over 500 jobs to stay alive.

Yes, it is a mighty fine image and may be the best of what was recorded, but let's check back in 5 and 10 years to see if it is still remembered. As to being named iconic by today's popular culture I'm finding through the college students I teach that many of this generation have the attention span of gnat.

->> @ Chuck -- "famous" is pretty overused too. Just listen to a local radio station and pay attention to the ads. Everyone has "famous" pizza, "famous" customer service, etc. It actually makes me laugh when a small pizza shop in random town USA claims to have world famous anything.

->> Well Anthony, ehhhhhhh I'm going to have to disagree with you as have some of the other posters of this thread.

I agree it's a great shot without question. But let's be real, what Anthony is describing is more along the lines of pop culture of the present, what's a hit today is forgotten tomorrow. This photo has a long way to go before being placed in those unforgettable images of the last 50-60 years that have endured the test of time and embedded in our memories.
