Interesting pic from today's building collapse in NYC

->> There looks to be a DJI Phantom in the frame. Wonder if it's being utilized by FDNY or if it belongs to one of the media outlets.

->> Interesting photo Robert. I found mention of a "drone" above the scene in this report:

http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2014/03/12/explosion-reported-at-harlem-buildin.../

"Earlier in the day, a drone could be seen flying over the area, CBS 2’s Don Champion reported."

“We’ve been seeing a drone flying above the building,” Champion reported. “We assume that it is investigators getting a better vantage point of some of the damage that’s been done by this explosion.”

I would be interested in knowing how Justin Heiman/Getty Images took his photo. Does anyone know if there are other buildings close with the proper angle, or could he have used a "drone" to take a picture of the other "drone"?

@Bob - I'm originally from NYC so I know the area. It's densely populated with many similar (and taller) buildings throughout the area and in close proximity.

I'm fairly certain a lot of the shots we are seeing with a similar vantage point are coming from the roofs of nearby apartment buildings.

->> Robert, thanks for the update. That is what I assumed, but had no way to verify. I thought the chance of having two drones there at the same time was slim.

So today we see photographers occasionally pushing each other in scrums to get "the shot". Could we be looking at future "Drone Wars" to get the best angle for the photo? My copter is bigger than your copter,if the FAA doesn't get its way?

->> Bob-

These are the two buildings that blew.

Via the NY Post:

"The collapsed buildings, 1644 and 1646 Park Ave., each had a storefront on the first floor and apartments above. One housed a Spanish Christian Church and the other had a piano shop called Absolute Piano."

Here's the photo you're talking about:

Which if you look at the satellite the only building that matches that notch round vent and HVAC vent with squirrel cage, is this five story building on 116th
http://tinyurl.com/l9s97lt

So it was shot from the South-Southwest looking North-Northeast.

Park Ave drops one story in elevation on the block between 116th and 115th and this was shot from a few stories higher. Counting for the 1 story drop in elevation that's 7 stories for the roof, plus ~ 5 stories for the angle....

Two blocks south at the right sight line is this building which is 19 stories tall and blocking any other view from the South:

I'm betting that it was shot from one of the middle apartments on the North side of that building between the 10th and 13th floors.

->> Not too comforting to have a drone over that site. I was in a helicopter yesterday to get some aerial stills of the scene, and NYPD asked ATC to keep us some distance away as there was an NYPD helicopter orbiting 400-500' over the scene. Using a drone in the proximity of low flying aircraft is never a good idea.

Most other high angle shots from that area are from adjacent rooftops, as to my knowledge there were no other drones flying and the only other helicopters in the area mid-day yesterday were TV news, not stills.
