->> I am currently running OS 10.68. If I update to the current OS 10.8?, will I have to reinstall or re register any software or with everything work seamlessly with the new OS?

->> Mark, It all depends on what programs you have installed. they might need to, you'd need to check with each individual developer site for info.

also the current OS is 10.9.2

->> The current is 10.9.2. I've always done the updates and once you update, you may have to update other software to work efficiently and securely. The updates that were so horrible were from a change in the PC processor to the current processor. It is now pretty seamless, but not guaranteed.

->> I have done every Mac Pro OS update and have never experienced a backwards-compatible issue with any program installed on my computer at the time of the update.

At least that's been my experience. Apple seems to do a good job of executing the update and cleaning up anything left behind from the previous OS version.

The latest 10.9.2 update, just released yesterday, is a critical one from a security perspective, as most of us are aware, as its been all over the news.

->> Mark, what versions of Toast Titanium and iView Media Pro are you using? 10.6.8 is the last version of Mac OS that supports running Rosetta for old PowerPC applications so depending on how far behind you are on those two programs it could be an issue.

There are a few issues that you may encounter with CS5 that Adobe outlines here:

Could be broke (security issues) and he doesn't know it.

If it is a PC Mac, there is a limit to the updates anyway.

Both work, but the CC version is a great program in comparison. Worth the subscription price IMHO.

When you upgrade and first launch PS 5, it will inform you to update your Java as well. Takes just a few minutes...

My biggest problem was some fonts that didn't transfer and that I could never find...

I don't want to, I quite like Snow Leopard, but I've started making plans to upgrade to 10.8 Mountain Lion myself.

If you have Parallels installed on your Mac (running 10.9.2) you can install Mac OSX Server 10.6.8 (disk available from Apple for $19.95) on a virtual machine and use those old programs that need Rosetta.

It works.

This is pretty typical with major updates of any OS.

Assuming your machine running 10.5.8 is supported by 10.9 Mavericks you can get it done. Here is an article outlining the steps:
