Important security announcement for SportsShooter members

->> We sent out an email last night regarding the password reset we just performed on all member accounts, and several people asked us if it was real. (It is.)

Just in case it got lost in a sea of holiday spam, I am including the text of that email below.

(If you don't see a "Forgot something?" form on the password reset page, then please log out of your account and return to that page - then you'll see it.)

Thanks!

-------------------------------
Dear SportsShooter.com Member,

In the past few months, several members have contacted us regarding an increase in the amount of spam mail coming from their SportsShooter member pages. In response, we've conducted an audit of our systems, and discovered a completely unrelated and obscure security hole that could have revealed member passwords, so we decided to take the steps necessary to patch it immediately.

During the weekend, we patched this hole by adding new security features that further protect username and password information. We have reset all user passwords as a safety precaution to ensure that if anyone has been able to exploit this hole without our knowledge, they won't be able to do anything.

This means that you will need to reset your password, and won't be able to log into the system until you do so.

To do so, please use the "Forgot something?" form on this page:

http://www.sportsshooter.com/member_login.html

Use the email address associated with your account (the one that this email was sent to.)

You will be sent a link to follow to complete the act of resetting your password.

If you have any questions, you can reply to this email and we'll respond to you directly.

We apologize for the inconvenience, but it's better to safe than sorry!

I've been getting a bunch of spam from the "Sportshooter Reader sent you an e-mail" method and then got the security note and wasn't sure if it was real or phishing.

->> Folks,

Changing your password has no impact on whether or not you might receive spam from your contact form.

It was an unrelated fix that we pushed out. It was discovered while researching the spam issue.

->> I know it doesn't affect SPAM.

But the security note says that the security loophole was found while trying to cut the amount of SPAM coming from the site.

That SPAM is continuing. Obviously the authentication method needs to be changed for validating e-mails before send.
