Congrats Neil Leifer!

->> Since I shoot a little boxing here and there, I figured I'd pass this along. Neil was elected today to the Internatational Boxing Hall of Fame and will be enshrined next summer. Congrats Neil. I shot Mike Tyson's last fight as a pro, and Neil came up to me and said hey kid, mind taking a picture of me and handed me his camera, then I turned around to find him posing with Muhammad Ali, was a pretty cool moment...

Here's his quote from the release...

“I am very, very pleased and quite honored. I’m very often asked what my favorite sport to photograph is and I always say without a moment’s hesitation, boxing has been my favorite. And there are two reasons why. One, I think the nicest people I met in the world of sports were in boxing. On both sides - the fighters and the supporting cast. And secondly, being lucky enough to have my career parallel Muhammad Ali’s. There’s never been a greater subject for a photographer than Muhammad Ali.”

->> Thanks for posting this Ed! This is a huge deal, and Neil is so thrilled with the news.

SI.com has just posted an online gallery of some of Neil's best boxing pictures:

I had the insanely good fortune to work for Neil way back in 1990 when he was the boss at The National Sports Daily. I will never forget the first fight I ever covered. It was October of 1990 in Las Vegas at the outdoor arena at The Mirage. Buster Douglass vs. Evander Holyfield. Neil was there to help us edit, etc. and he walked me out to my position- a mid level platform- and gave me tips on how to shoot boxing! Incredible.

Congrats to Neil. I can't wait to see the Leading Off in the magazine this week celebrating this huge honor.

->> The first overhead shot of Ali over a fallen Liston was a huge moment for me in my longing to be a photographer. Congrats Neil wish he would write an article or two here every now and then but a great photographer
