->> Weed... Pretty funny, but since both Washington and Colorado voters decrimilized marijuana the problems associated with how to license businesses, monitor them and make the system work has become a major problem.
In Washington, most small town councils are placing a moratorium on marijuana businesses for six months until the State gets its act together. Also, marijuana is still a federal crime and there is a lot of acrimony between whether or not Washington and Colorado will run up against a very tough federal law.
So, I can see the need for someone to be in charge of articles written about this interesting subject. |

->> The Denver Post has published an article about marijuana 6 days or more per week since voters chose to legalize it in the last election. Since 2005, there were probably 4 or more stories per week.
Colorado made marijuana possession a "petty offense" in 1975 and "decriminalized" it's possession in 2005.
There are actually at least 16 states where marijuana possession has been "decriminalized" (meaning getting busted is akin to getting a speeding ticket, no court appearance required, no misdemeanor on your record).
The Denver Post's coverage of all issues related to these developments has been generally outstanding. At times the coverage has been a little one-sided or scewed (an article several years ago made the assertion that relatively more marijuana-related business owners have criminal backgrounds than non-marijuana-related business owners. This seemed like circular logic to me and probably not worth reporting). This is a serious, important issue and one that deserves a reporter's full-time attention. Plus, the articles undoubtedly drive page views/newsstand sales. |
