Anyone made the switch to iOS 7?
Byron Hetzler, Photographer

->> Looking for feedback on iOS 7 from anyone who has made the switch. Saw it on my editor's phone this morning and while there are things I like, I definitely didn't like the looks of the new calendar.

->> I only had an issue with the time it took to download and it didn't recognize that I already had iTunes 11.05. I went to the phone and did it through settings. Took a while to download and install. Then I did the software update on my Mac, and it loaded iTunes 11.1.
I don't use a lot of applications, but the ones I have updated quickly. I'm fine with the new look. There have been reports of the battery icon showing a low battery sooner. There is a great upgrade in the find my iPhone that won't allow a thief or finder to wipe the phone without knowing your iCloud password, making it more difficult to sell illegally.
Apple is pushing the technology similar to Bump and using the iPhone to pay for stuff (like at Starbucks). Will be more useful as they roll out the scanners.

->> I agree, the new calendar is really bad. But, I do like the new command center. It's a shortcut to toggle commonly-used items like wifi, airplane mode, etc. The new e-mail allows you to mark items as junk and move to folders. I've not noticed any difference in battery life, but I did notice that almost every app on my phone was running in the background after the OS install. Closing background apps is easier and faster now.

Two items of importance are "Advertising" and "Background App Refresh". In most cases, you will want to enable the "limit ad tracking" for advertising (settings, privacy, advertising). This will pretty much stop (or limit) your phone from sending info to advertisers. The "Background App Refresh" is a good option, but it will drain your battery and burn up data usage. I've toggled mine to off (settings, general, Background App Refresh).

I would definitely recommend running a back up prior to upgrading the OS.

->> Don't care for the calendar on the iphone. unless I'm doing something wrong you can't get the whole month at a glance with each day/appointment on it. On the iPad it's basically the same as the old operating system but you slide it down to change the month as opposed to sliding right to left. Texting is also not that great. Deleting individual texts from a person is a lot longer process as opposed to the "delete conversation" one button move on the previous. I do like the itunes Radio feature and the way the photos section is more organized.

It is a bit different, but all everything seems to be working well ... The calendar is ok ... a different look, but all the functionality is there ... no other glitches other than learning the the new icons ... I also like the iRadio feature ...

->> I haven't downloaded iOS7 yet - my internet connection in Bangkok is too flaky for me to do big software updates - but I quit using the iOS calendar app a while ago for Fantastical, which is an excellent calendar app for both the iPhone and Mac. The iPhone version was recently updated to work with iOS7.

when you initially installed the software, were you able to import your calender? My wife wants to upgrade to IOS7 but worries about losing all her data.

Some things are in different places, which is to be expected, but overall, I love the new OS.

Additionally, you can then use the "2013" link to navigate past and future years years ...
