Thanks, but that comment takes the cake for the most senseless comment ever on SS. Not trying to be an ass but seriously? what does shooting a sequence like that have to do with a Speed Graphic? Photos like that WERE shot on 36 exposure rolls of film....but a Speed Graphic? ahhhh NEVER. That's insulting to Rebilas's skill and perseverance as a motor sports shooter....ahh hell...his skill as a friggin great sports photographer.....if you were looking for some "funny's" you missed the mark.

Mark does not shoot for the Associated Press and since he covers auto racing for another media outlet, he would not be shopping his photos to the A.P. during an event. I have to seriously question your intervening and helping stop the A.P. from buying his image from a race because it seems highly unlikely.

Please clarify how you had the A.P. editor step in and ask to see Mark's raw image file. What you are stating as a fact doesn't sound like a rumour, it just sounds false, not to mention that the A.P. distributing Mark's image is bad for his business and income.

->> Oh boy! More great information from an informed source. Obviously Mr. Frischling hasn't had the opportunity to work at many sporting events with the wires present. It is quite common for staffers at various wires services to ask other photographers for submissions if they see something they like during an event, especially if its an angle or moment they might have missed. I also never read in Mr. Powers statement that Mark was "shopping" his photo around. I too have seen wire service photographers back off from using a photo because it was, in their opinion, over imaged. That happens. Work flow of various photographers differ, as do the amount of imaging they are allowed to do for their employers. The AP is very strict. It would be very easy for that to happen. It doesn't necessarily mean something bad, it just means people have different standards for publication. And finally, "bad for his business"? How so? If the photo goes out on the largest wire service in the world, with the right restrictions attached, it could be a HUGE moneymaker from sources that would never see it in the regular circles Mark's photos are circulated. Members might be astonished at the way people are treated on this site but I'm quite frankly amazed at some of the disinformation purported as "fact".

Mark captured a great sequence regardless of what some members might think about him. It doesn't happen very often that a photographer gets a chance to shoot a sequence like that. I've only had it happen twice, once on film and then with digital.

The fact that he stood there as the car cartwheeled toward him is a testament to his nerve, even if he was shooting with a long lens.

And what's with bashing Fish every time he posts? Did I miss something in the past five or so years?

If you think that our coming on here to correct your very public disparaging remarks is about us 'loving Mark' or not 'loving Mark' then I'm afraid that you just aren't going to get it.

If you're going to come on here and call someone a cheat then you'd better have more info than you appear to have. This stuff gets archived so, even if I didn't like Mark (which I do), I'd still feel compelled to come on here and counter your assertions. I'm glad to see others have done the same.

In this business your reputation is paramount, so I'd hate to see someone's reputation damaged by what I see as careless and ill-informed remarks that are quite simply contrary to everything I know about the guy.

I trust Mark and, frankly, everyone I know trusts Mark. In fact, I just sent one of my best commercial clients to Mark the other day for a very important shoot rather than flying out there myself because I trust not only his abilities, but also the manner in which he conducts himself as a professional.

->> Will,

I waited to respond to get a little more information before speaking publically. That’s what responsible people do before making accusations on a very public industry forum.

You claim I was attempting to sell the image to AP. That’s odd because for the last 8 years I’ve covered NASCAR in Phoenix I have been shooting it for US Presswire (now USATSI). How would I get away with selling an image to a competing wire service? Why would AP take on that liability? Why would I risk that?

The Phoenix staffer for AP who is always at NASCAR is Matt York. He attends the races every year for as long as I can remember, shooting along with editing the stringers stuff. Matt and I have been friends for many years and I couldn’t recall ever trying to sell an image to him or having him decline an image due to questionable ethics. BUT, just to make sure I wasn’t off my rocker I gave Matt a call and asked him if he ever recalled an event like you claimed above to have occurred between him and I. As expected he answered with no and he didn’t recall it ever happening. Like me he said he would remember it if it had.

So my question for you is who is this editor that declined my unethical images that I was attempting to sell to a competing wire service? It should be really easy for you to have them verify your story.

This will be my last public comment on this situation and I happily await your response or that of the editor who can verify your story.

Mark

It was Matt York. Ir may have been insignificant because he didn't buy it and forgot about it. You may not remember sitting next to me that doesn't mean it didn't happen. It may have been an insignificant event altogether since nothing came of it and everyone just forgot about it but me. It happened, I'm not trying to destroy your reputation, I think your a fine shooter and people have told be me you are a better person than when I met you maybe 10 years ago in Phoenix. I wish you well.

An afterthought. It is also possible that Matt thought about the situation and realized that he couldn't offer to buy the photo because you were the competition, then forgot about the whole siuation Since you still work in that market, perhaps Matt doesn't want to be involved. I have nothing to gain by "calling you out." As others have said I have a lot to lose. This isn't a court of law. People recall things that are important to them. Witness memories fade if it wasn't a big deal to them. It was important to me. My memory of the event is as I stated to Brian Blanco and Fish, which I was not as succinct when I posted here.
As I said before, different publications have different standards and you work within those standards. At that particular event, the photo that I was shown did not meet the standards of my organizations. I can leave it there.
