Is this Photoshopped or is it real?

->> I ran across this story on The Washington Post's website about World Press' Picture of the Year. It is a very powerful image. It is compelling and tells a devastating story without a single word.

My question is this: Is it real? Real in the sense that it is it what the photographer saw at that moment or is it a massively manipulated image created with software?
I ask due to the depth of field, amazing light in an alley, shadow detail from that light, perfectly exposed highlights and all the other little things that make it look less like a news photograph and more like an advertising image.
My sincere congratulations to the photographer, Paul Hansen. I do not for a second mean to discredit your shot. But it does have a look to it that makes one wonder and if it was heavily edited.
And that brings us to the crux of the issue. Based on the assumption that he saw the funeral procession and photographed it, it it ethically acceptable to seriously edit an image for exposure, color, contrast and focus? There was a time that you could dodge and burn 'til your heart's content. How far is too far? |
