| ->> Story circulating about tasteless Duke students chanting "How's your grandmother?" at a State student in last nights game who had recently lost his grandmother. Did anyone shooting the game actually hear this? |

| ->> Okay. Good Gawd. This DID NOT happen. Plain and simple. Their was a chant was during a second half foul shot by Tyler Lewis. The Cameron Crazies were chanting "Past your Bedtime" because the State player, Lewis, is a freshman of small stature who looks to be about 13 years old. There are two things that should not surprise anyone. (For those who don't know this kid's grandmother died last week and the Cameron Crazies have been accused of chanting "How's your Grandma?") One: where the "story" originated. It came from a NC State blogger who tweeted it from his seat. This guy runs a NCSU fan site...most of us consider these kind of blogger's nothing short of being jock sniffers. He IS NOT a journalist. He makes a living (I guess) by saying provocative things to get hits to his website. So he tweets this and all of a sudden there's a firestorm about the "chant" that never happened. Two: We've all covered sporting events. Cameron Indoor Stadium is the best place to ever watch or cover a basketball game. The kids come up with some real zingers in their chants. Sometimes they are so funny or clever they have all of us on the baseline laughing hysterically. Are they disrespectful? Sure they are. Are there a few assholes who might have yelled that out during a foul shot. I wouldn't be surprised...but to be honest it was so loud from the "past your bedtime" chant I haven't spoken with a single person who was covering the game who heard anyone say that. this is another troubling example of where the mainstream media jump on an made up tweet by a blogger that becomes a "news" event. it's a shameful and disappointing occurrence which unfortunately seems to be happening more frequently. this is the second "tweet" story in the past week that we've had to chase. both were false and both caused the reporter and myself to pull our hair out (well I don't have any to pull out) so please....I cover duke as our papers beat photographer. I cover state and unc also at times. I would take up for either of these schools if they were being hammered like this. the fact is...there was no chant. have a great weekend. |

->> Thanks, Chuck, it is a bit hard to believe Duke students would do that... That's why I asked the question, cause I wasn't there.
FYI, and more to the point, just after the UNC student body president was murdered not long ago, before the Duke-Carolina game the Duke fans at Cameron did a minute of silence for her and you coulda heard a pin drop. |
