Who really needs DSLRs? Just use your cell phone! Fun Read.

->> This has got to be one of the funniest and most interesting "In My Bag" posts published on Photo Brigade...Gary He, a shooter in NYC, uses only mobile phones and other mobile devices for his photography these days and thinks we all need to trash our fancy DSLRs and lenses. A fun read....curious your thoughts on the topic....

"We’ve all been there, at an event with our legit cameras and our legit lenses and all of a sudden this dude holds up a giant iPad to take a photo. You yell at him to get out of your way. But have you ever thought that maybe you’re the one who is in the way? Yes, you. The pro. Getting in the way. Of the future."

->> If he can con clients into accepting the images that a cell phone produces then more power to him.
No wide angle lenses to carry, no telephotos, no lighting gear. His back will thank him.
Of course that also means that he can't offer the variety of images that someone using a DSLR can but hey, some clients probably want a simplistic style that they don't have to think too much about. Maybe they equate "speed" with "quality".
Picasso paid for dinner many times by doing a simple drawing on a napkin and then signing it. Restauranteurs fell for it and were happy to frame a signed "Picasso" and hang it on the dining room wall.
To each his own. |

->> I'm not entirely against iPhones and mobile devices, they all have their own place in photography. But what he wrote is pretty much 100% pure arrogant bs.
well eventually someday some camera company is going to have cellular data built in the camera. then thats when those phone cameras can go suck it. |

->> Meh -- fast action is overrated. Technology made that a moot point many moons ago. Give me something compelling. I could care less what it was shot with -- mobile phone, oatmeal container pinhole, newest and best dSLR ... whatever.
I enjoyed the article. I didn't read any arrogance per se in what he was saying; some of the tone seemed in jest. |
