Westminster Dog Show

->> Hello fellow SS'ers...
The paper is sending me to NYC next week for the Westminster Dog Show. (There's a strong contingent of Maine dogs competing this time around.)
Has anyone here shot this before? Aside from the helpful info in The Guide about MSG, any things to know about access/restrictions, how long glass I'll need etc?
Thanks in advance for the help, and if anyone is near MSG next Sun-Wed and wants to grab a drink (after deadline!) feel free to hit me up! |

| ->> Can you get one of your Maine dog owners to let you attach a GoPro to one of the dog's collars during a practice round? Or (in it's waterproof case) during grooming or a bath? Could make for some interesting video and you could pull some stills from the footage. |

->> I just did the puppy cam thing last week... The weight of the camera will cause it to spin the collar so that the camera will be under the dog's chin. I used the GoPro tripod adapter and 1/4-20 short bolt to mount the camera to the dog's collar. Also remember to change the camera's orientation setting to allow for the camera being upside down or the video will all be upside down when you ingest it.
Unless the dog is going to be in a pool or expected to get wet just go with the skeleton housing. The waterproof case really muffles the audio. |

definitely not waterproof, but definitely less obtrusive. |

Keep 'em coming if anyone has more ideas! |

| ->> You could also mount the GoPro on the end of a monopod and hold it down at just above floor level. Wander around the ring and the prep area with a camera at dog level... |

->> Hey guys,
Here is a link to my blog with some more photos: http://wp.me/p1dE2i-ft
It was a real fun time and a crazy world to be dropped into! Lots of pictures to be had.
In case anyone digs up this thread in the future looking for advice on what its like, here's a few bits of advice.
For the best of breed competitions you won't really need long glass. The rings are small and access is pretty good, though security can be a bit strict. A smile and an explanation of what you're trying to do usually goes a long way.
This year they held the best of breed competitions at Piers 92 and 94 on the West Side and the light sucked. It's pretty green and I was usually up around 3200 (sometimes 6400 if I needed more DOF.)
As for the group competitions and Best in Show at MSG, that speaks for itself. Long glass would be a must, and the light, while not great, is a bit better.
Hope that helps someone in the future!
Thanks again, Karsten, for the nice words. It was great to meet some NY shooters... |
