| ->> Are quick release plates beneficial? I was thinking about getting one for my 400 so I can quickly get the monopod off when there are times I need to. |

| ->> They're great in theory, but I've had three losses this year directly related to a quick release plate...cost me about $10K. Needless to say, I've rethought the convenience. |

| ->> Use base plates all the time, I always verify that they are seated when I connect them. Seems to save wear and tear on the threaded hole on the lens foot as well. |

| ->> Been using Arca-Swiss style plates on every lens and body I own for over a decade. Never a mishap. |

->> John,
What brand plates did you have? |

->> RRS and Arca Swiss
One loss was trying to use the Arca plate on the RRS mount..that was self inflicted stupidity, and I'm fortunate the 5d was the only resultant liability.
The second loss was accidentally popping the latch with the monopod over my shoulder...I Liddy'ed my 400 and needed to replace my 1Div shutter box.
My third incident was a repeat of #2. I don't know what caused that separation. Fortunately the 400 survived, unfortunately the camera needs another shutter box replacement.
...not selling my 1Diii has proven to be a godsend. |

| ->> John, you might want to get rid of that lever release clamp on a monopod.Throwing it over your shoulder you should only have a screw knob on your clamp.I use a Wimmberley C-12 clamp with my 400/2.8 and 300/2.8 and have never had an acidental release in 8 years. |
