Anybody get sick after the Rose Bowl?
Michael P. King, Photographer
Madison | WI | USA | Posted: 6:33 PM on 01.08.13
->> To make a long story short, on the evening after the Rose Bowl (January 2) I ended up in UCLA Medical Center's emergency department after likely contracting norovirus at some point during the preceding 24 hours.

I won't gross you out with any further details, but I'm just curious if anybody else felt "gastrointestinally ill" after spending the day covering the game at the stadium, or spending the evening at the media hotel.

Not looking to cast blame or flame anybody... just trying to see if there's anybody else who was a victim of a very bad bug.

Only lasted about 24 hours, but those 24 hours were hell. Then took a few days to recover and get my strength back. Nasty nasty stuff.

->> Michael, I know of one other person, non-media, who got it, though not with such ... vigor... so to speak.

I'm glad you made it through the ordeal but as for who, or what caused the illness, from what I understand a lot of places had it; a lot of airports, and a few hospitals were inundated.

I'm not sure that that any of this was media related, though the result of the game did leave me pretty ill...

->> The reason I'm tying it to the Rose Bowl is that I'm told there's a 24-hour incubation period for the virus.

24-hours before I presented symptoms was game day, and I was in relatively a limited number of places: Media hotel > Media shuttle bus > Rose Bowl stadium and workroom > Shuttle > Hotel.

I was stuck in the WH Protective pool, and one of the stringers that was hired by AP was hacking up a lung and a half the entire time the president was in Hawaii.

and the rest of the pool was trapped in there with her!!!

Michael, hope you're doing better.

->> Michael:

If you speak to a physician about limiting exposure to illness they will all tell you that the best way to stay healthy in a contagious situation is not to do all the things that you did while covering the Rose Bowl.

Don't expose yourself to crowds.
Don't use public transportation
Stay away from congested common areas
Wash your hands after every contact with another person
Wear a mask when in public.

Those are all things that don't work well while performing journalistic duties. Can you say .... Job Hazard.

This years influenza has taken the country almost in pandemic ways and to stay healthly it's important to try and remember to limit your contact with any potential carrier. Hard to do effectively as a working photographer huh.

->> This is a BAD flu bug. The ironic thing is that this year's flu vaccine, according to reports, is perfect for combating it.

I got my flu shot in November. But I can't get my wife or so to do so.

People, go to the friggin drug store if that's easiest, but GET A FLU SHOT. If you think you'll miss it because you're you, chances are you'll be in for a surprise, a very nasty surprise.

->> Just to be clear, the original poster was talking about Norovirus, not the flu. The symptoms of Norovirus are nausea, diarrhea and stomach pain but mostly, it's characterized by you puking your guts out.

Yes, "the flu" or influenza is reported to be pretty bad this year, but that is an entirely different virus with different symptoms.

->> I probably caused some confusion by calling it a Stomach Flu. Gastroenteritis and Norovirus which are commonly referred to as the Stomach Flu or "The double barrel action flu" is not related at all to Influenza. A fun fact, though, is that Gastroenteritis and Norovirus are so virulent that they survive and can be passed on in chlorinated pool water.

->> A few years ago I got sick after the 2010 Rose Bowl and we hosted the BCS Championship the next week. For those of you who remember I was pretty much a walking zombie when I gave the photographers briefing. Being alone in a hotel room for 5 days sick is never fun. Unfortunately its that time of year and the "crud" seems to raise its ugly head. I was at PMA a number of years ago and felt great when I got there and a few hours later I was totally out of it with what they said was the Norwalk Virus. 3 Days in a Vegas Hotel room mostly on the floor of the bathroom drinking 7up and Gatoraide is no fun. The best action is WASH YOUR HANDS! And if you are on the road with no one to help you, at least make sure you force down the fluids!

Yesterday the CBC Radio One had a great show on Vomiting Larry, a robot that vomits.

Aside from being a quirky story on a a strange robot, it is also an interesting look at how the Norovirus is being studied.

->> Let's be blunt. As always, if you have a bad case of diarrhea drink plenty of fluids so you don't get dehydrated. Once the virus works through your system you'll begin to feel nauseous, you'll feel so weak all you want to do is sleep.

On day two, when you run to the bathroom ready to vomit keep in mind you've been drinking cherry flavored gatorade for 24 hours. Don't be alarmed, you are not puking your guts out.

Thank goodness my wife mentioned red Gatorade a fraction of a second after I thought my life was over, at the least, a visit to the emergency room and surgery.

The illness pretty much ruined my Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

->> Masks don't work against viruses. That's what makes me laugh at all the Japanese people who do it. Just pound the vitamin C and zinc before you go out in a huge crowd, wash your hands every time you touch a door handle or go to the toilet. Shake hands with as few people as you can get away with.

When I was officiating basketball we would shake hands with the captains at center court before tipoff, and I was constantly sick. Then the lights came on and I quit shaking hands with captains and stopped getting sick. Immediately after handling basketballs for two games I washed my hands... and I haven't had a cold in three years. I know it sounds hypochondriac, but it works... (why are we talking about this?) Is this WebMD???

Can't say for sure if it was a virus or food poisoning but everyone who got sick had lunch at the Marriott.

I was there and have felt fine, no problems. I ate some of the food in the photo room so I dont think that may have been the problem. Sorry to hear you had such a bad experience
