But.

Why does everything you link to have to go through your blog?

Clicks?
Advertising?
Money?

I find it very annoying and it's the reason that I make a point of not clicking on any of the links in your postings here.

If it works for you though, feel free, because as always, YMMV.

My thoughts, if people are readers of any blog, they'll check it or get an RSS feed. I don't usually agree with (or encourage) Colburn, but most I ever see from you, Al, is links. That doesn't speak poorly of you, and I'm sure we would get along well over a beer, but... this irks me a little bit. Maybe because if everyone did this it would get out of hand.

My two cents. And I won't start about iPhones any more than I have, because I doubt many people would agree with me.

I am replying to your questions and comments...

Why does everything you link to have to go through your blog? -- Not always.
Clicks? -- Yes
Advertising? -- Yes
Money? -- Yes

My blog usually has photos, stories, links and videos that I cannot post in their entirety on the message board. As a default I post everything on my blog first then spread it around on social media. SS is just one of my many stops but it is my favorite.

Kauzlarich, you have to watch the video to get it.
This has nothing to do with a photojournalist using an iPhone as a tool. Please don't jump to conclusions so easily.

This post is meant to highlight the Sprint video and comment on the language used in an advertisement to achieve a desired effect on people. It implies that a consumer is a photojournalist just because they are using an iPhone 5 to take photos and post photos on social media.

I am sorry but if I buy a hammer does that make me a carpenter?
If I buy a thermometer? Voila I am one of a billion roaming doctors!

Consumers have been using cameras for over a century. I don't recall anyone ever calling these consumers, who share their photos, as photojournalists.

->> The language in the video is an affront to our profession, photojournalism. I'm surprised so few are commenting on the topic of this message thread. It's a missed opportunity.

There is a short commentary I posted regarding the language on the Sprint video on my blog as well as on this thread.

I posted the link to the video on my blog first then pushed it out to social media. That's my work flow.

Of course by linking stories, videos and photos to my blog I hope to promote my site, contributors, sponsors and affiliate links.

As much as I enjoy photography, spending time on SS, sharing and giving back to the profession, it is a job... a fantastic job, I love my job, but it is a job.

Time spent on this site and posting on my blog is an an extension of my profession. It takes away from my family, friends, recreation.... Life!

Bottom line, I don't work for free.

So I annoyed a few people, I got the point and will take it into consideration, but I hope some of you have empathy and see my point of view.

Israel Shirk posted a direct link to the video ( fourth from top). Watch it and then comment on what you think OF THE SPRINT VIDEO. Forget visiting my blog.

Good for you Al, some folks (myself included) are in this business to make a living and if I can point someone to my site/blog who otherwise wouldn't know about it then it's effective marketing.

"A billion roaming photographers" How do I compete against that? Who needs a four-year photography degree? Buy an iPhone, voila, you are a photographer!

I have seen some amazing work taken on a smartphone and horrible work taken on a smartphone. Likewise I have seen amazing work taking using thousands of dollars worth of gear and horrible images taken using thousands of dollars worth of gear. Just about everyone here knows it's about how you use the tools and not about what tools you have.

Until recently...anyone who takes a photograph is technically a "photographer," while the barrier to entry to call oneself a "photojournalist" was pretty high. So without further qualification, "photographer" is (or was) an easier title to come by than "photojournalist."

->> As for the "post to his blog" issue...

I see members on here all the time posting links to their work on their paper's web site. I see no difference between that and posting links to one's own blog.

I post links to my own site all the time. I generally do so only when I've elaborated on my site with additional detail that would be difficult to post or excessive for the message board, and then generally in answer to a question posed by a member. Can't think of a time when I've initiated a thread to tout a blog post, although since I have no life and post multiple times each day I can't possibly remember for sure. (grin)

I do think it is bad form to post affiliate links (i.e., product links for which one receives a commission) here (which Al has done) or to "advertise" products for sale (which a certain sponsor's employee has done, although maybe the rules are different for sponsors).

If a potential employer can't distinguish your work product from the average cell-phone user's work product, you're in trouble. If you're relying on the term Photo Journalist being applied judiciously to keep you working, you're in trouble. If you're relying on it being applied judiciously just to feed your ego, then you're in trouble. If an employer or a potential client doesn't see the value of your work product at your price over what the masses give from their cell phones than protecting the term Photo Journalist won't help you.

I don’t think society is gravitating towards a semantic shift on the word photographer to photojournalist. It’s more likely the scriptwriter is confused with the definition of the word photojournalist. A lot of money paid for that mistake to happen. At the least the writer interpreted the term loosely and is applying it in the broadest possible definition.

This is the definition of the word photojournalist from Wikipedia.
Photojournalism is distinguished from other close branches of photography (e.g., documentary photography, social documentary photography, street photography or celebrity photography) by complying with a rigid ethical framework which demands that the work is both honest and impartial whilst telling the story in strictly journalistic terms. Photojournalists create pictures that contribute to the news media.

Sure, I do feel I’m in trouble.
If there are a billion “photojournalists” shooting pictures with their iPhones no wonder newspapers and magazines are laying us off the last several years. Even SI has laid off staffers.

It’s another nail in the coffin of my livelihood but in this case maybe a just small tack.

Also, I personally don't see the problem with Al linking through his blog. A big part of the business is self promotion. If you don't want to visit his blog, don't. You can probably google 99 percent of what he links to, if you really want to see it. I don't blame Al for wanting to promote his site a little bit.

That's my 2-cents worth. By the way, I didn't click the link to see the video, because I've already seen it way too many times.
